Dead Phoenix Worms?

Hi, everyone! So I've been feeding my chameleon some phoenix worms lately which he really likes. On the Phoenix Worms website it says that if the cup smells like ammonia, there is a dead worm in it. Well... my cup now smells like ammonia.:( It also says to remove the "obviously" dead worms. Well, that's would be fine, if I could tell which worms are dead! There have been worms that didn't move at all, and then like half an hour later turn out to be alive! I just wanted to know if there is any easy or sure way to tell if the Phoenix worms are dead or alive? Maybe someone has some experience with or tips about this? Thanks! :)

Remove all the worms and put them in luke warm water. The live ones will come alive and wiggle. The dead ones will...you know...:D. Also, the ones that are all black and stiff like, those are in the pupate stage, so they are still good.
