Day 8

Oliver is on his 8th day of Baytril (skin injections, not oral) and I am starting to really worry about his food intake. In the past month he has only eaten a few super worms, some bug juice and a butter worm I forced today. :(

Hornworms + Butterworms came in the mail today, which are his favorite (next to supers) and he turns his head away, almost as if he is afraid of them. He won't take dubias either, his staple since he was a baby. I know Baytril can be hard on his kidneys and I really need him to eat.

Do you think this could be a hunger strike as a result of the supers (which were given two days before we went to the vet)? Is there any other tricks I can try to get him to eat, other then forcing a syringe down his throat? :(

He drinks like a horse, though :)

I am sorry to hear that Oliver is not doing well. Why is he on Baytril? Maybe his sickness makes him feel bad and he doesn't want to eat. Just keep feeding him how ever you can so he want get weak until he eats on his own again.

He got a nasty skin infection from a scratch that I tried to heal with neosporin, but it just didn't heal. The vet said his skin had a reaction to it, so it is in a really deep shed atm. :(

The black is the actual infection but the cracks were my fault. I was careless with the neosporin and put too much on over a period of time. I should of taken him to the vet the first day I noticed it, but I thought I could heal it on its own. Im sorry buddy :(

So I went back to the vet and she put him on .08 mils of metacam. Has anyone had any experience of this with baytril? I know he needs to keep his hydration up but are there any other ways to prevent against kidney problems. Thanks :)

I think he will be okay. I made another batch of bug juice (horn and butter worms this time) and although he hates me sticking things in his mouth, he needs to eat.

He will not get dehydrated on my watch

Keep up the good work and take care of that little man. :)

Thank you for all of your support! :)

I am rotating roach bug juice and worm bug juice to help balance his nutrition.

I just hope he doesn't hate me by the end of this. Force feeding and soaks definitely do not sit well with him.

Update:

3rd time at the vet and we are continuing injections for another week or so.
He is shedding on both sides which is good, it it just taking a very long time.

He has also developed what I believe is conjunctivitis in one eye, which the vet prescribed drops for. She didn't take a culture but did see that the eye was inflamed.

What's worrying is he's losing weight each time we go back so I am now adding carnivore care 3x a week along with the bug juice and repta boost.

I know the carnivore care isn't the best protein source but I believe he needs it to bulk up.

This will be his 4th week on injections. Has anyone had problems with this length of treatment on ceftaz?

( I did miss type earlier, he isn't on baytril)

Not great. I had to leave to house sit for a friend so I had fed him a lot of liquified food on friday and this morning he was really bad. My mom said he was pale white and hanging up side down, so she rushed him to the vet. I met them there and he finally pooped and started to throw up. The vet thought that all of the food may have impacted him.

After that most of his color returned and he started to act normal again.
Now the vet thinks he is calcium deficient so she prescribed some liquid calcium to give to him twice a day.

I stopped the eye drops because I don't want him on all of these meds at once.

He is still on repta boost, some dino fuel, repashy all in one and alternating carnivore care.

He is very dehydrated from today so I have been giving him water orally every 30mins to an hour.

He just looks sad and I don't know what else to do :(

Oliver does not look good. If it were me I would have stopped the antibiotic weeks ago. It sounds like you are giving him to much stuff. I'm going to see if I can get one of the vets on here to look at your thread.

Thank you :(

I just called the vet and left a message about stopping the injections, so I should hear back pretty soon.

I need him to get better, I don't want to lose him

How experienced with chameleons is your vet? Where do you live in TX? There's a good Cham vet in Houston.

She is familiar with reptiles and a little with chameleons. Is there a way I can talk to that vet? I know mine might be getting in contact with the vets down at A&M but I don't think my parents would drive to houston

Thank you, I will call them.

I am hoping to get a vets opinion on him here as well

He's enjoying a shower now
