Cyrus drank sugar water...!?!

Cyrus is going to the vet tomorrow morning for a prolapsed hemipene, but for now I was soaking him in cool sugar water to see if it would shrink enouhg and he could retract it on his own. He suddenly leaned down and took a couple gulps of the water. it had high concentrations of sugar and I am worried it may be really bad for him since they are not physiologically "made" to eat/drink sugars. What do you think??

If you are wondering why I was doing the sugar thing...http://www.anapsid.org/prolapse.html

I wouldnt worry too much about drinking the sugar water. Just keep him very hydrated for the next several days. I'd never heard of the sugar water trick to reduce the size of prolapsed tissues. Thats an interesting article/tip. I'm sure others on this forum would love to know about this.

I had not come across it before either, but I do trust her. Unfortunately, it did not seem to help and is still too swollen for me to get back in :(

I was worried about the sugar and his tiny heart. Figure veiled get natural sugars via fruits, but panthers don't. Right now he is laying on his back, napping in my lap (this is normal for him) with a big glob of KY on his protruding hemipene - what we do for our animals!

thanks,
lele

Napping on his back WOW normal??? is that a joke?

That is not normal for any chameleon. What you need to do is take that poor animal to the vet.

Ryan,
Cy has a neurological issue and, yes, it is normal "for him." He sleeps on his back, on his side, in a pot, sometimes in my sock drawer (when he falls off his perch in the middle of the night). This has been going on for a few years (he is 4 1/2). If you do a search for "Cyrus" on the forum you can read a bit about his history. The napping has become more frequent (and is recent) and may be his age. 4 1/2 isn't that old but considering his past health issues, it might be in his case :(

We are going to the vet tomorrow morning for the prolapse and bloodwork. He gets regular fecals, etc. He gets excellent care ;)

I still wouldn't wait. A day can be all the difference. Him being 4.5 years old IMO is more of a reason not to wait.

Thats just me. Never said you were not giving good care. Time is not on your side especially at that age.

Even pardalis can eat fruits from time to time. About the sugared water, it's not the first time i read such thing, and i don't see a big problem with it, including when he drank some. As it has been mentionned, just in case, keep watering him in the next few days and it should be fine.

The napping on the back is quite unusual!! For that reason, a vet visit seems pressing.

EDIT: i just read the last two posts, and if you can see the vet today, why wait for tomorrow? ;)

unfortunately I have no choice. I am driving across the state to do a presentation today/night and my vet is almost an hour in the other direction (I live in rural NH). He is going in first thing in the morning.

He's an odd boy. He is still chipper, eating, basking (off my lap and under his lamp - with a KY "diaper" on). But I will be scared as anything to leave him at the vet tomorrow :(

Cyrus routinely rests on his back or side. Leave it to lele to keep this odd boy going so long! You can trust lele to get him to the vet as soon as humanly possible. No one could give him better care. Good luck with him lele!

lele knows what she is doing...she has dealt with this peculiar chameleon for long enough!

Good luck to you and Cyrus, lele!

As for sugar water...a saturated sugar solution is used to take down swelling in the case of prolapses...and works quite well in most cases. Its usually a sugar solution that the vets have pre-made that is used but it should work okay if home-made properly too.

One thing is though...you have to watch that a fungal infection doesn't set in after the surgery.
