Cynthia’s new cage build

So I have started to build the new drainage table. I’m just gunna post that here as well instead of making a new thread.

I dont have any pictures of it yet I’ll take some tomorrow. I have the entire frame built and all the ply wood cut. I had to take the frame apart so I can bring it down in pieces and set it up since it’s to big to fit through doors and down stairs. I also have to paint some parts of it but I’m going to be painting them and putting them in place as I go.

Here is my current setup. In order to build the new drainage table I have to disassemble half of this and move it all to the other side of the room since the new table is going to be in its place. Should be fun.

I’ve got all the cages moved to the other side of the room now. Had to cut the legs down on Lennon’s drainage table to make it fit under the ceiling. Just gotta paint a couple pieces then start putting the new drainage table together.

Sides and back put on.

Front facing put on as well.

Just have to finish painting the facing for the top and the doors and get it put on. Now at this point your probably wondering how this wooden table cabinet thing is a drainage table. I’m getting to that. This thread will eventually get back to Cynthia’s cage as well but I have to finish this first.

Had a crazy busy week at work last week so this all got put on hold for a bit but I’m back at it now.

I’ve got all the facing for the top painted and put on. Just gotta paint the doors and put them on still.

Now the part I’m sure you have been wondering about. The actual drainage. I got some washing. Machine drain pans from amazon. They are 30 x 28 OD and 25x27 ID.

This is the locknut drain fitting that came with them but I’m not using them for a couple reasons. 1. They are kinda big and it’s hard to find pipe that size ( I have no problem with this since my dads a plumber) 2. They sit a bit to high so there would be like a 1/2 inch of water in them before it would drain off and I don’t want that much water sitting under the cages at all times.

I opted instead to use these 1/2 inch locknut pipe fittings. Fits smaller pipe and will sit lower. To seal it I got some cork washers and some nuts the right size. All 3 will be connected with pipe inside the cabinet and run to one bucket or container.

Since I don’t want my cages sitting down In The drain pan I made these egg crate platforms for them to sit on.

So what I have left to do :

- Paint doors put hinges and knobs on them and put them on

- drill holes for the drain pipes
- install drain pipes
- drill holes for misting lines
- put cages in place
- hook up misting system
- finish Cynthia’s cage
- test it all.

Looking good. What are you going to do with the gap between the drain pans? You could put a plastic "U" molding piece upside down on each on of them to cover the crack.

What did you use for the egg crate platforms? Will the plants just sit on top?

It’s called egg crating. Used for ventilation in ceilings. Comes in 2x4 ft pieces. Just have to break it to size and put the pieces together with zip ties.

I’m still going to have the bottom plastic in the cage just have holes drilled in it so it still drains off. The holes in the egg crate are kinda big so crickets etc would escape.

Oooo ok! I had to read that a couple times to get a mental picture lol. Thanks a great idea, can’t wait to see the end product!

Ok I have made lots of progress on the drainage table. I got the holes drilled and drain pipes all hooked up.

You can see the cork washer under the nut in this picture. You will see why I’m pointing this out down below.

Got Lennon and melons cage on it so far. Waiting on mistking pieces before I put Cynthia’s new cage on and finish it up.

Got my mistking all setup. Still need to change some of it but waiting on parts. I also have a lot of extra space for storage.

So today I came home from work and came to check on my chams like always and I hear water dripping I was like oh nice my new drainage table is working. I looked underneath to see how much water was in the bucket and I see this.

The cork washer didn’t seal around the pipe properly so water was going through the thread of the locknut past the washer and dripping down. So to fix this I started with the tray in the middle without a cage on it right now. I took the cork washer out and just put the locknut on and put a bunch of silicone around it. Once that dries I have to move Lennon’s cage over and do his tray then do the same for melons cage.

Nice, I almost did the same thing to the sides of my glass enclosure. I was thinking of ways that I could attach the vines and sticks to the sides. But I ended up just foaming drift wood into it for me to attach the vines to the sides.

I told my wife that next year I wanted to add a Nosy Be beside the enclosure that I just finished this week. She didn't seem as excited about it as I did. :(

Just watch next thing you know she will be in love with the chams and surprising you with new ones lol.

yeah, she loves animals. She didn't want me to get my Sun Conure either, but she talked to him more than I did.

But everyday when she came home and saw me in the garage working on the glass enclosure, she would just keep saying, "I hope this thing is worth all this work", lol

Lol definitely worth it. And you did an amazing job on it.

I’ve got the plants put In. 2 huge pothos plants and a couple spider plants. The spider plants are looking a little sad at the moment but the should perk up in a few days. Got a few branches put in so far. Working on adding more branches and vines today. Should be ready for cynthia In the next few days.
