ok so i never considered getting a reptile for a pet as im more of a cat/dog traditional type person... however, yesterday while sitting on my back stoop (i live in an apartment complex on campus of the ohio state university), a bum walked by rambling about some kind of weird pet. He said it was in the previous dumpster he was digging for cans in (which was the complex right next to mine). I walked over and in the middle of the dumpster was a broken cage with a couple of supplies in it and a chameleon who had crawled out and was sitting on a trash bag. Soo... what i think happened is that when the previous owner moved out he just left it in his apartment rather than giving it away and assumed it would work itself out, but the cleaners when finding it were just A**holes and launched the whole thing in the dumpster (excuse my language but its disturbing the manner in which they were disposing of this creature).
Anyway, so i take it in clean up this cage, tape over the holes of the cage, and fix this whole thing up. Now I just want advice on this thing so he can survive. So far:
1. the cage is probably 2x2x3
2. bottom has a 2x2 styrofoam cutout painted to look like rock?
3. on top of that i dumped reptile mulch (big pieces so he wont eat them)
4. there is a giant piece of driftwood leaned up the wall of the cage
5. there is a waterfall thing but the pump is broken so its really just a decoration
6. there is all this branch material i have strategically strung through the entire thing that feels like wood on the outside but inside of it is a thick wire so you can conform it to different angles
7. i bought i 100w reptile light bulb and placed it on top... he can get within about 3 inches of it if he climbs all the way up
8. i took an old fishbowl and pin holed the bottom of it and sat it on top of the cage, it drips really slowly through some leaves and catches in the waterfall pump thing i mentioned....
9. i have a sprayer as well
My main concerns are this:
at first i fed him 2 flies from the dumpster which he quickly consumed and than i went to petco and bought 15 crickets and dumped them all in.... he ate 4-5 throughout the course of a couple hours. the problem is now that hes done eating he really hast even moved for like 12 hours... also he wont make any attempts to drink!! i also need some info on how close the light should be... how long to have it on... should i only dump in what he can eat or is it ok to let those things stay in there for however long it takes... how do i make him drink... etc. etc. etc.
hopefully someone will take the time to read this bc im sure i wrote too much but i just wanna make sure i get out all the info that i can so that anyones response can be from an educated standpoint. ok thanks every1... help me save this chameleon!!!.. oh yah how do i figure out its gender lol?
also which name is better or provide a new one i havent thought of:
Karma or Chamillionaire
