controlling humidity

hi. ive been trying to find this question and cant find a good answer.

- i use a half glass and half mesh cage. my humidity seems a bit high. (85%) how do you people lower humidity levels?

Im not sure Ive ever seen that question asked!!
Its always the other way around, maybe a light fan, not blowing directly on the enclosure? that might help dry things out a bit

yeah i was thinking of installing a small computer fan.. the basking spot is only at 79-82. i have 2 live plants that are planted in a tray with dirt and rocks.. im shure the humidity wouldnt hurt much at 85% but i just want my setup to be perfect.

the set up would be fine, but I would worry that your cham is getting so much constant humidity that an RI would be lurking around?

yeah.. im really not shure what to do.. it drops to 70% when i let it dry out. anyeone else? i would love to resolve this problem!

What is an RI?

Depending on how big your enclosure is, maybe when you upgrade you can just get (or make) an all screen one..Thats all I have to offer. heh.

what about drainage though? maybe if you set up a drainage system of some sort it would help get rid of some of that extra water and lower the humidity a bit.. mmm.. otherwise maybe you could take out a plant and replace itwith a fake one? Just some ideas.

oh, duh. i just replied to your other thread. mmm.. maybe just let it dry out and dont spray as much? thats pretty much all i can think of. I think I read that you basically poured water in until it started dripping out so many that initial rush of water jacked up the humidity?

other wise comp fans seem like they might work, or maybe put soemthing in there that absorbs water and is safe? (no idea what, but there has to be something)

wow im surprised that this wasnt discussed before.. yeah i will figure something out.. im pretty creative so i think i can solve this. i only watered that much to check the system out. now ive been testing with regular mistings and using the dripper (drips every 7sec) and the humidity constantly stays around 80%. maybe i will let the tray of dirt dry out a bit and see how that goes. maybe i will need to take more glass out and add mesh. maybe computer fans blowing the air out? who knows! i will figure this out.

ok. i had another idea, maybe not brilliant but it could work. extremely simple but i think itd be worth a shot (although youd have to do some work)

so i was thinking about it and most people dont have that much soil as far as i know, so maybe the soil is retaining more water than you think.

i would say you should try to make the soil later thinner OR ... this is kind of hard to type but take out some of the extra soil and fill the middle in with rocks (aside from where the roots are) as if the rocks were the planters?

or you could even really just replant the plants in planters...heh. then just bury them in rocks and it would look the same but less stuff to hold moisture.

i think that could help a lot, just a couple suggestions.also you could try drilling some extra holes along the top and or maybe closer to where the top of the rocks are - sort of like some terrariums have.

hhhm.. adding rocks in a middle layer may actually work.the soil doesnt seem that wet at all. its slightly damp.. i will let i dry a bit for 1 day and see how it goes.. if its still high then i may add that middle layer.

for anyone that is wondering.. i have been able to bring down the humidity using a small computer fan running through and on/off switch which is connected to a 6v rechargeable battery. this actually works really well!!! the fan blow the air out of the tank.
