conjunctivitis...

my local pets store has a poorly ambilobe chameleon with conjunctivitis which he has had for 2 weeks. they're willing to let him go to me very cheap (£50) and i'd like to get him out of that poor situation. they will not take him to a vet or anything.

how is it treated? is it life-threatening? is it worth me saving him? how much is it likely to cost me at the vets?

i'll be going in an hour or so, so any prompt information/advice would be fantastic. thanks.

Ooph, I am hesitant to say this, but... Do you mean he just has crusty eyes with gunk? It may be an easy fix as far as what to do. Mine had something similar and it cleared up with an antibiotic eye ointment for two weeks. At a cost of the vet visit plus the $30 for the ointment. However, we can't give you really clear advice without seeing him, it's tough for us to know anything with certainty. If you really want to save him then go ahead, but know that he'll need extra care for a while.

Sorry for any typos, I'm on my touch phone.

his eye is permanently closed, and sunken too. some days it stays open, then closes again for days at a time. that's the best description i can give you.

assuming it is conjunctivitis perhaps relating to the light, or to irritation, or allergy, it should not be life-threatening should it?

what (if any) eye drops can i treat him with?

I can't tell you what drops, but sometimes they'll close their eyes when the have a respiratory infection that has spread to their sinuses. So that would be antibiotics and lots of time. Only a vt can tell you for sure, unfortunately. Iy could be life and death, but it really depends on what it is on how hard it's going to be to get him healthy.

I would not buy poor animals from shops. You do not know the condition other than what they are telling you and from what you see. Unless you have your heart set on this particular chameleons for some reason i'd pass. Hopefully that shop wont be selling chameleons anymore or at least attempt to treat them instead of discounting them in the future.

Someone has to save it!!! It could be something simple to fix or take a long while but for the price and a vet visit you could make a cham pretty happy. I hope you go and get it ASAP. Keep us posted and good luck!

Save what? That really makes no sense, its not about the price.
