compact UV bulbs and reflector hoods

Been reading, reading, reading...want to be very clear on this: compact bulbs are a no-no because of...unknown, undesirable radiation of some sort?

In my 4'x2'x2' black screen cage, I used a single-bulb hood with an exo-terra 10.0 compact bulb and another hood that housed two compact bulbs opposite each other, one side with an exo-terra 5.0 compact and the other side with an exo-terra 2.0 compact. I figured this would give three levels of UV penetration, which would simulate the natural environment more closely.

The hoods rested on the outside top of the enclosure, so even though the basking branch for the 10.0 was about 8 inches away, my cham could have gotten too close by hanging off the ceiling. He never exhibited any signs of radiation-related problems, so...was my setup wrong? Do I need to sell off my $50 worth of hoods?

Yes, it would be a good idea.

Did you read this site? If you did read the site listed you would not be saying "compact bulbs are a no-no because of...unknown, undesirable radiation of some sort".

Buy a new linear hood and Zoomed Reptisun 5.0. If you have a lot of coverage in your cage maybe buy the 10.0 lamp. You should also have a daylight UVA lamp for heat. You will have to figure out the wattage that works best for you from experimenting.

I had a compact kill my panther. So you won't see me holding up the compact flag.

I did look over the site, but they didn't mention exo-terra, and it also said something about new bulbs coming out this year. I said 'radiation' because I remembered something about phosphor, and didn't know what else to call it...don't really understand the science here.

better safe than sorry, right?;)
