Chameleons in need of help this week...

Hey guys,

I have been a previous owner when i was younger of a veiled CB chameleon.
And now i have finally made the move and i am getting another.

So here's the dilemma:

I ordered two pygmy WC temporalis'
and one veiled baby, 3-4" which didn't state it was WC or CB but i'm assuming CB. I did email them for confirmation though, still waiting for a reply from reptile depot.com

Anyways, a fecal is not an option as there are no exotic vets where i live and their 5 hours away. Although most fecals are somewhat the same for small animals so maybe they could do it?? Really all you need is a microscope right?
and they have them sooo....?

That may not be an option so, i'm looking at dosing with pancur whether or not they have parasites. As preventative. I really don't want to have any zoonoses go on in my house with myself (worm phobia) or my 3 dogs and 1 kitty. I am guessing you get the fenbenzadole powder in a certain mg and dilute with a certain amount of water and then get a small syringe and go by the weight 1cc/kg. ??

Does anyone know an estimated weight of what i can expect for an adult pygmy temporalis and a 3-4" baby veiled?

Also, what preventative measures and handleing precautions does one take when not knowing if the cham has worms or not... and if it did?

I wouldn't do anything right now. The chemicals are strong and giving them to babies and pygs when yhou don't even know if they have parasites just would be putting them in the way of harm for no reason. Check with your local vet to see if they can do a fecal for parasites. I'm with you, a parasite is a parasite....LOL

I would not treat the pygmies or even bother with fecals on them.
Wait until your veiled is about 6 months old to worry about fecals on him.

i lost my female veiled at four months to worm infestation, not sure i'd wait that long, thats just me though i'm paranoid now, so i'm not contradicting brads advice at all:o

Also..if you don't do a fecal you won't know what parasites the chameleon has. If you just use fenbendazole you might not be treating all/the right parasites.

I have always given WC chameleons a chance to settle in before worrying about treating for parasites...unless the chameleon is having an obvious problem.

I would wait.

have the vet do fecals, then make the call. No need to jump yet. Just be mindful with the chams when you handle them. Wear latex gloves and keep the area clean.

Tom Routhouska recommended not treating pygmies for parasites.
I do not plan to treat my wc's, but will keep any offspring in separate enclosures.
