Gizmo started making an audible sound after eating and I thought he may be choking or something. In the time it took You Tube to parse the video it has stopped, but should I be concerned?
I've not seen a cham do this before and if it were me, I would be worried and take him to the vet. When was the last time he pooped and what did it look like?
I would watch him very closely for the next few days. If he makes that sound again I would get him to the vet asap. I think he was pissed you were so close to him while he was eatting with that camera. It didnt sound like a uri which is what i thought we were all going to hear.
You should really fill out the help form so we can take a close look at your husbandry. everything else is just guess.
He definitely does not like it when I get close to the cage, but he was making this noise before I got the camera so I know it was not a result of me. He is getting more used to me every day and no longer retreats when I put crickets in the cage.
I have already posted the help form before so I did not want to repost and I am fairly confident on my husbandry at this point. I have raised chameleons in the past (veileds) and dart frogs and bred snake of numerous species.
Since making the video he has been basking and drinking and even ate another criket so hopefully one just went down the wrong pipe
I will keep a close eye on him as he is in my office where I spend about 9 hours a day anyways. If he stops eating or continues with the noise I will certainly have him examined by a qualified vet.
I was just hoping someone had seen this before with one of thier panthers as I have never raised them.
Here is a link to my help form and I have followed most of the advice given on that post:
This is a new one for me too. I've never heard a sound like that before (from a chameleon anyway). The motion he made looks more like a burp than a cough. Not sure if chameleons can burp. Or perhaps he swallowed a cricket that was not crunched before it went down. I've often wondered if crickets ever pinch or bite on the way down. I've had them pinch/bite my fingers before. If you don't see it happen again in the next week I would just assume something went wrong as the food went down.
Thanks everyone for your responses and I guess it is interesting that I documented a behavior that many have not seen before. Hopefully I will not see it again as well.
I agree with you Paradalis Girl. I think he got one that did not get crunched first and it was probably fighting on the way down.
