Hello guys, this is my Chameleon Cage Design I am wanting to build. What do you think?

The Cage is 30''X30''X8'

It is mesh half way up, plexiglass is the blue(so crickets dont climb out) and then open air for the top half.

If the top is open completely then crickets will find a way out and it would be better if you made the screen all the way to the top and create some type of door. Other than that this looks like a good start. Just make sure to use atleast one good plant in there to help with humidity.

it's nice and all.. but, when you say open air, Does it mean no obstruction at all?
Are you saying that your chameleon will have free access to get out from his enclosure anytime he wants?
If that is the case, then you might want to either redesign the cage or just completely free range him.

I wanted to be able to look at my chameleon without any obstructions (mesh) in the way, so I will just leave it open. I practically am free ranging him. I wanted to have a nice looking enclosure too (since its in my house). I tried to make the bottom half so that crickets wont get loose by making the edges half way up impossible to climb (the glass) and none of the branches would touch at the half point so that the chameleon can traverse them but not the crickets.

I love the design, but like others have said..be prepared to lose your chameleon. If he can escape, he will. He will not stay in the confines of open air box. He will reach out to the top of the plexiglass and then take off down the side.

that sounds like a good idea, but i feel like the crix would find a way out. theyre more clever than you would think

After thinking about it I might use thin sting to form an "invisible" fence on the top half. Do chameleons ever squeeze through holes(mabye 3"x3" net)?

i dont mind free ranging the chameleon I just dont want him to get hurt falling out of the cage. Would it hurt a chamelon to fall 3.5'?

My juvy panther could easily fit through a 3" net, not to mention anything that the Chameleon could use to move around, so could the cham's food. Cool idea your cage is, fairly impractical as well.

The crickets will go to the posts and climb, or go up the plant and jump. They are very resourceful. If you can believe it, my adult cham has pushed open an unlocked door and made it to the floor which drove my dog crazy! Fortunately, my dog didn't eat him or bite him, just barked.....

The post would also be blocked by glass so the crickets couldnt escape that way. Can crickets jump straight up from branch to branch?

crickets can jump from branch to branch. they cannot jump straight up however. It has to be in an angle. The most notorious escapists are the little one.
But, seriously, owning a chameleon also means having insect escapee here and there. That is just something that all of us have to deal with.

and, yes, like others have said, don't underestimate chameleons skill to escape as well. I have mine escape once (but, luckily I found out before he gets too far).

If your finished product is as good as your drawing, you will have a great habitat! Couple of thoughts; No cats in the home, right? The bottom looks open, so find a container that can catch water before you set the size of the enclosure. Good building to you!
