Chamaeleo chamaeleon....

Chameleon Queen
I found this very interesting. It explains in part, the winter behaviour I noticed in the ones I had.
"Hibernation takes place in the hollows of trees, under leaf litter, among piles of stones or under, between or under rocks, or simply in any ground cavity"...
"Chameleons usually live near any growing tree, shrub or vegetation. In areas where the vegetation is sparse or nonexistent, they can be found by lifting small piles of stones under which they find shelter, but always near an area of water even if the presence of water is temporary"...

I felt bad about the squished ones....but it happens....guess we should be aware in a way.

They were one of my favourite chameleons, even though they weren't as colourful as some or as large.

I detest driving at night in the rain because there’s no way to avoid running over the frogs that are hopping all over the roads. There have been times when I’m driving and see an anole taking a thrill ride on my hood and I’ll pull over and try to chase him off.

I hate seeing any critter flattened on the road.

There's one road not to far away that is closed for several weeks every year because there's an endangered salamander that crosses it during mating season and dozens get run over if the road is left open depleting the numbers even more.

They are fascinating chameleon of the Mediterranean/North Africa region.

I think the poster of the website show pictures of the road killed chameleon to share importance why one of the attributes they are declining in their native range.

I agree. Too many animals everywhere meet the end like this.

Do these guys show up in the U.S. ever? I feel like I may have seen them but I'm not sure since they share a similar body shape to some other species

They used to...a long time ago, but I don't know if they do anymore.
They showed up here in Canada once in a while too.
What other species do you think they look like @KingLove ?

I'm surprised they don't show up more in N. America too, but I guess they aren't "cool" or fashionable ATM. It wouldn't surprise me though if there aren't a few people breeding them.
I thought I had seen some for sale about a year ago, but I could be misremembering—or more likely confusing the species. I also don't remember whether they were CB or WC. I don't see any currently in a cursory google search, but I haven't delved deeply into a search, e.g.:

To me they remind me a little of helmeted chameleons (except for the nose) or even (female) veiled chameleons.

Body shape wise they look a little like carpets to me- obviously the colors are different but the pictures in that article made me think about carpets a bit

You would have no trouble telling one from a carpet chameleon if you saw the two together @KingLove .

It's not simple to get babies from them. If they come in the right time of the year, you will get a clutch of eggs that year and a few fertile eggs the following year...but if they aren't hibernated they won't produce any more after that until you successfully hibernate them.
