Ceramic heater vs. heat bulbs for chameleons?? Just wanted everyone's opinion. I have heard that chams need to see light to be drawn to basking area & I know that they have sensitive eyes so I can see where ceramic heater is good option.

I use a 60wat regular household bulb for a basking area. My cham likes the light and heat. As far as I know the only time that people use ceramic heaters is for night use if it gets extremely cold and they don't want a light source that will not keep their cham up at night.

So, the "spiral" fluorescent UVB bulbs sold for reptiles are problematic for our reptiles. Since this is a thread on heat sources, I ask you this:

Do regular(not the reptile UVB bulbs) "spiral" fluorescent bulbs(aka normal CFLs) have these same issues?

From what I understand the regular household UVA coiled florescent (normal CFL's) don't cause any eye problems. They don't put out much heat compared to a regular household light bulb which most people use for the chams basking area. However some people use them as a light supplement for their plants or cham species that can't handle high basking temps. I hope this helped.

thanks! I imagine to get equal basking temps, if you compared the wattage used for the two types of lights, it would be more efficient to use normal bulbs but the light for my indoor plants was the reason I asked
