Carpet cham droping eggs.. refuses to dig

I have tried several different tubs.. different colours, depths, shapes. different laying media... sand, soil, mixes etc. Inside her cage, larger ones outside the cage. Left her in the tubs for days on end. Still no digging! She randomly drops eggs! One or two a day for the last few days. So far the eggs all seem viable and are incubating on vermiculite @ 70 degrees F. What can I do to encourage her to nest? It is very stressful for both of us. lol. Ideas?

Don't beat yourself up. If you made the medium fairly moist and she refuses to use it, just incubate the eggs as she drops them. Usually they drop the eggs in bulk, and often overnight. You'll get the hang of it...besides, she's a fresh import so nothing is normal to her right now. Dropping eggs has nothing to do with them being fertile or not fertile, and incubate and hatch out healthy babies just fine as long as they didn't break during the drop or dry up before you find them. Keep us updated :)

Thanks, I really appreciate the replies. I'll post some photos as soon as something happens. Cheers!

Sad news... the little female carpet cham didnt make it. I have the 4 eggs she dropped incubating and will be re-homeing the male with a local forum member. It is tough when the little guys crash so quick. R.I.P. Barchetta

I am very sorry for your loss Jim, I went through something very similar a few weeks ago. My girl dug and buried 18 eggs, and over the course of the next week seven more eggs dropped out. She went down hill rapidly and when I looked inside her there was one egg that didn't work it's way out. It is truly amazing how much damage one egg can do. So sad :( good luck with the eggs, I wish you all the best!

Im very sorry. Iknow how you feel. I had the same thing with my female carpet. I dont know what it is about them. All i have heard is bad stories about carpets and eggs. Keep ur chin up.

I think I am going to lose a female panther to eggbinding pretty soon. She just refused to lay this time...I tried different laying bins and it did nothing for her, she got really weak a few days ago so I was going to get some oxytocin but then yesterday she seemed to be doing fine again, woke up this morning and her eyes are heavily sunken in.
The clutch might very well be fertile, I would like to recover the eggs from her if she does pass. Im just not sure how I am supposed to go about doing it???

Why not talk to a vet about doing an x-ray and giving her oxytocin? When was she mated (so I don't have to read your posts)?

She has not had a male since the 12th of February. She laid a clutch around 18 or 19 days later. Now she seems to be gravid again though with a lot more eggs. Shes had a laying bin in her cage the whole time, 2 actualy and now she just went down hill within a couple hours.

Sorry to hear that, Jim. Hopefully the eggs are viable. This happens all too much with WCs. Just not much you can do for them:(

Sorry to hear that also Jim! That really stinks. It's rare that carpets seem to retain eggs, but unfortunately that doesn't make it any easier when it does happen.

Hopefully those 4 eggs will make it, and you'll have some hatchlings to look forward to :)

Thanks alot for the replies. It seems to me the whole importation process is really hard on some chams... maybe the luck of the draw as to how smoothly it may or may not go that particular shipment. Compared to alot of WCs I've seen I thought these looked really good. I was surprised to learn that out of the three pairs I had picked up initially, only one female is still alive but is hugely gravid and seems weak as well. Sad really. Three lone males in seemingly great health. Anyway... onward and upward. Cheers!

Jim we will have to hope you can get her to lay or worst case, harvest the eggs and do like Kevin did and start a successful captive breeding program for carpets in Canada. I am hoping for you and the last female.
