Can't do it!

I broke down and got a dozen Dubia today. They are so creepy but I picked one up on a plastic spoon and she "clicked" her wings at me and I screamed and it bounced her off the spoon!! OMG then she landed upside-down on my kitchen counter and I was screaming and I didn't want to touch it but I didn't want it to get away and have babies in my house (I know they are tropical but I bet it's above 85 degrees under the fridge!). I put a cup over it and scooped it into the container...My whole family is traumatized by my screaming. Friggin' disgusting creatures!
 
I don't mean to laugh, but this is funny.

Try using a pair of long tweezers? T This way you can just pick them up and dump them into the enclosure :]

Haha it IS funny, now that my heart rate is back to normal. No tweezers, I am NEVER going near them EVER again. I was about to flush them down the toilet, but my daughter asked if she could feed them to her ancient (10 year-old) bearded dragon. He ate 3 of them......YUK!

Lol. That's good. Atleast they didn't go to waste.

Did your daughter handle them, or was she grossed out by them too ?

Wow, I never even thought about it until you just asked! So I asked her and she said she just picked them up! THANKS! Now I'm even more creeped out! I threatened to ground her FOREVER if any get loose in the house! Did I mention I will never buy them again?:eek:
 
Shauna, maybe your daughter can feed them to your chameleon for you? As you only have a dozen, you won't have trouble feeding them all off even if she just feeds them to her bearded dragon. If you'd bought in bulk I was going to suggest putting out a "care to buy a few dubias" message because lots of us would like to try them but don't have a source for a good "trial" number (because I'm pretty sure I'd have your reaction....and to have 250 of them and be totally squicked would be bad).

Yes, I am really glad I didn't buy in bulk! My daughter did put one in Fuego's cup, he watched it for awhile, but when it did that wing-clicking thing, he got scared! I think maybe that one was too big for him? I made her take it out after an hour because I was afraid it would get out of the cup. Maybe I will have her try a smaller male tomorrow The males are still gross, but not quite as bad since they don't have wings. Oh well, you live and learn! At least the beardie likes them, he will eat ANYTHING, and I'm pretty sure he is indestructible since he's so old yet shows absolutely no signs of aging!

And I don't want to put anyone off, you should try them. I know they are good for the chameleons, it's just an issue I have, I'm sure some may find them un-repulsive. I think it's the way the "scurry" that bothers me.

Well atleast your daughter can feed them to your cham now. So that's good.
Long wings = Male, short stub wings = Female. Think you have them mixed up :]
 
I suspect the ones you can buy locally are too big. When you buy them online, in bulk, you can get them smaller. The only place I can buy them only sells full sized adults....I have small chameleons...I can't be buying insects that are over an inch long....
 
my husband bought in bulk and made a motel for them. They are supposed to be better for jacksons, so I am moving away from crix. first time I reached in to find small ones a big one crawled up my arm and I also screamed while flapping about madly in the living room. Now my daughter helps me also and my husband when he's home. Morty and the beardie Butters both seem to enjoy them, and my pygs come faster to eat with the roaches than the crix. Yucky
 
I hate roaches and would probably never try it, but just a thought: What about a dustbuster dedicated to your dubias? I have one for my crickets (I can't stand the full-sized ones), and I just suck up the desired amount, pour them into the dusting container, shake and bake, and dump into the cages. That way I never touch the crickets, and if one gets loose I can quickly turn it on and suck it back up! I'm not sure if the dubias would be too large, but it's worth a try.

That is really a great idea, and maybe somebody else can try it! I'm done. I tried again today and I'm convinced they can smell fear;).

I'm pretty sure they were like, "Hey, here comes that chick that screamed yesterday. Let's see if we can make her pee her pants today. OK amigo, when she walks over, click your wings as hard as you can, and when she screams, I'll make a run for it. I'll go find out where she took Armando, Jose, and Pedro.":cool:
