Camille update and questions

Since Camille didn't like any of her laying bins my husband set up a big trash can for her yesterday with about a foot to a foot and a half of sand. He said she immediately went down the branch he had in it and started checking it out. When he got home from work yesterday she was digging and by 8:00 this morning she was almost laying on the top, very weak and thin; with the hole covered. She's drinking and eating heavily calcium dusted feeders.

How will we know if the eggs are fertile? She was mated on July 10th. What temperature do you incubate veiled eggs? We live in FL and our house stays pretty warm. Our coolest closet is about 77 to 78, will that be too warm? I may have to keep the AC cooler than normal????

Aww! Poor Camille! I am so glad she laid them ok! They do look very skinny and sorry for themselves when they've finished! I remember how Lily felt the first time I held her after she laid her first clutch - I was shocked at how small and thin she was!:eek:

I think that fertile eggs are slightly bigger and whiter than infertiles. Lily's infertiles were certainly quite yellow/creamy looking. I can't help with the incubation aspect though, sorry!

Hey Jann, Congrats on the eggs. Poor Camille all that hard work she must be exhausted. Glad she finally laid.

Here is the answer to your question on this thread https://www.chameleonforums.com/need-advice-veiled-eggs-26315/

I don't have any experience with veiled eggs so I dug that up for you.

Thanks Tiff and thank you Ryan.......very helpful post. Lynda (Kinyonga) keeps her veiled eggs at 74 F. That's pretty low. What would happen if they were kept warmer? Anyone else????? Any tips on how I could keep them cooler in my house without more AC and running up the power bill?

Jann I am not an expert having just hatched 2 clutches of veileds but I kept mine at 78. It may have been too hot and I didn't know but I only lost one out of the first clutch of 27 (I think) and so far none out of this clutch of 23. I did not think either of my clutches would hatch as the eggs looked awful but both did fine. Don't get rid of the eggs until they are for sure no good, mold, wrinkle & collapse, etc. Congrats and how many did Camille lay? Glad all went well.:D

Jann im so happy Camille laid without any problems congrats on that :) I think you should keep them at room temperature at 78 like said above. When the babies hatch im sure im coming to see them Jann :)

Hi Laurie;
He hasn't dug them up yet.....I am still out of town until tomorrow. Keeping them at 78 how long did it take them to hatch? Jann

Jann mine took forever!!! Almost 8 months for one clutch to hatch the other was just over 7 months. One of the guys from Europe (don't remember who) said my vermiculite was way too wet so that might be another thing to be sure of. I just have one of the hovabator incubator so the temp was not all the constant but most of the time it was between 76 & 78 but I did not have a way to make it cooler at night.:(

Jan Congratulation! Poor Camille.. it must have been hard work for her.
Well, incubating them between 75 - 80 (normal room temp) would be fine.
But, i would not subject the eggs to temp higher than 85.

Thanks Frans......that will not be a problem. My house never gets that hot.
