Cage size?

Can you keep a juvenile cham in an adult size cage if you cup feed so they know where their food is?

It depends on the type of chameleon, somewhat. What are you keeping?
Male veileds/panthers that are active wouldn't mind the extra space (depending on how much extra there is).
Make sure you get them used to cup feeding before moving them.


Could you provide some more info? Like the type of chameleon, sex, age, cage size...

I dont own any chameleons right now. im looking to get a panther chameleon.
I just got a 2x2x4 cage and want to know if i will definitely need a smaller cage if i end up getting a younger chameleon.

It should be fine as long as the cham is a couple months old. Mine have always picked up to cup feedings super quick.

well if you get a baby ike say 1-2 months thats wayy to big...ull need to get them a small one like a 18x 18 x24 ...once they hit 5-6 months then you can move him into the mansion....babys can fall easily...if they fall 4ft to there doom they will most likely die....adults however have good footing...so there ok

i have a 18x18x24 exoterra glass terrarium not in use right now. would it be ok to put a cham in that just until it gets used to cup feeding?

I say not if it's a 5 month old chameleon... I just hang a cup or two with food in it in the cage and let him find it. After a few days they seem to get it and eat.

I have been wondering the same thing, I will be getting a 3 month old male panther around february is that too young to put in a 2x2x4 cage if cup fed and well monitored? I will buy another cage if needed just want more opinions. Thanks as always, this forum has helped educate me so much, can't wait to become a cham-mom!

well monitering wont stop a cham fall...obviously in the end its up 2 you....but i wouldnt for a 3 month....i would keep him in a 18x18x24 then move him to a 24x24x48 once he hits 5 months

At three months they are growing that fast, I'd save the money, go for the larger cage.

Honestly, I think if you have some nice, non-pokey/hard plants (no ficus trees) covering most of the cage you'll be fine. Sure, babies fall, but if you have a healthy baby and enough soft plants the risk of falling and being hurt are way less. You could also cover the bottom with a soft substrate (moss or something) and cover it with fiberglass screen (so they can't eat it) if you're worried about falling. It lessens the impact.


Honestly, there are many people who keep babies in 2x2x4 just fine. I dont, but thats my choice. If I ever did, I'd keep many feeding cups in the cage and make it as safe as possible.
