Cage question

I have the exo terra glass cage with top screen. It is a 18"x18"24. Was thinking since everyone says that the screen for ventilation works better for chameleons, about removing the two glass doors and making some out of screen. Since i spent the money on the cage i am stuck with it and don't have the money to buy a new one so would the screen in the front and on top be sufficient air flow and any one have any thoughts on how to do it?

Exo terras with the vents under the doors will be fine. She will probably need a bigger space soon though (especially considering the laying bin will take up almost half of the space!)

I have a male veiled. so no egg box needed pssh and it docent have vents under the door's. Thats why i was wandering if i could mod the glass doors with some kinda screen doors. Just wandered if any one has seen or done this?

I am also going to do some major modifications to the inside of his cage to do to the info shared in my introduction thread. i am going to remove the waterfall this weekend

Oops, coulda sworn you had a girl! Well, I wouldn't bother spending too much money on this cage as he will need a larger one very soon.

I agree with pssh that your exoterra will be fine for a while as long as your veiled is still small. When he gets bigger move him into a larger screen cage.
Just don't put in any substrate because veileds like to eat it or waterfalls because bacteria builds up. Most people keep the floor bare or put down paper towels. But do add live plants like pothos, fig, schefflera. Also you might want to fill out the "how to ask for help" form you can copy and paste it from the health forum. It takes a little time but worth it because that way we can check to make sure that your lighting, temps etc are correct from the beginning so your cham can avoid any problems in the future

I'm surprised that it doesn't have a vent under the doors. Most do. Are there double doors or just one? And also what is the glass framed in?

I already filled out the how to ask questions in my general introduction. I am taking my guy to the vet on friday because i think my guy might have or be starting to get MBD. I hope that i can heal him the pet store said i have a 30 day guarantee. But i don't want to return him i love him very much, I just hope the vet can lead me in the right direction and that it does not cost me a arm and a leg.

And i guess maybe it does have some small vents under the doors it is the double door one and it is incased in plastic

Actually I think I saw your post..you just got him right and it looks like one of his legs has a bow in it that might be from MBD probably because of poor husbandry from the pet store? Is that you? If so I'm really sorry to hear that your guy already has problems and you just got him. The sad thing is that MBD is really hard to treat and it can be an ongoing problem because many times not only has it effected the bones but also the internal organs and definitely can be costly with vet bills. Definitely see what your vet says, but even though you love him you might consider returning him and purchasing a healthy veiled from one of our sponsors. Sorry, just a thought

Regarding the doors you might be able to remove one and smash out the glass then hot glue or silicone screen to the frame in place of the glass. I actually did that with a full hood that was used for a fish tank. Part of it was glass and I broke the glass out and replaced it with screen. Worked really well.

yeah that was me. see what the vet says only bad thing is if i do decide to return him is that i cant find my receipt. I seen one post on a aquarium that some one smashed the front i am thinking that maybe just removing the doors and moding it to where it could be put back to normal that way when time to up grade to a larger cage i can put the exo terra back to normal and sale it on crags list. after all that is where i got it in the 1st place for $40

That's a pretty good deal for an exotera. When's he heading to the vet? You'll have to keep us all posted on how he's doing. Hopefully he'll get better soon and just be a happy healthy cham

$40 is a good deal. I wouldn't worry too much about "remodelling" it. Be sure to keep your temps and humidity in range, and just buy a screened one once he gets bigger. They grow pretty quickly! The problem is not that he's kept in glass, it's just creating a proper habitat with what you have for now.
