Breeding Feeders

I'm thinking about breeding my own feeders. I have my dubias started and some supers started. But I'm thinking about others too. I'm thinking about breeding hissers, banana roaches, and discoid roaches. I'm thinking about starting some mealworms, butter worms etc if possible.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Sorry but you can't breed butter worms. They are rendered unable to reproduce before they are allowed to be imported to the US.

roaches and supers are good to start with. I also like terrestrial isopods and termites and silkworms.
There are some links in this blog entry you may find useful: https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/sandrachameleon/74-feeders.html

Its the wrong time of year to start it, but I've really been enjoying my soldier fly larvae project this year. My chams eat the self harvested stage and really like them.

Also I got some blaberus hybrid roaches this year that I really like a lot. They get really big though. Hissers are great fun and since you have an interest I'd recommend them.

I do lots of mealworms (make lots not feed lots percentage wise- I feed to my lizards as part of a varied diet). I just rotate all the beetles into a new bin every week or two and start new colonies continually.

Thank you everyone.

Yes I like bugs. I like to handle my roaches. My husband thinks that I'm crazy. I can see me raising all different types of roaches. Butvmy husband would probably throw in the towel and say no. Lol

But I want variety and large quantities before I breed my little girl. :)

topless

My superworms go topless (no pun intended). Your user ID might be a clue. Breed your heart out, no one wants to the same food day in and day out, well maybe lobster.

Unfortunately I have a 4 yr old son, a cat, and a free ranging beardie that will try knocking everything down. So can't have them topless. Lol

Found a shelf at Walmart on clearance so might pick it up to hold my bugs.

I have to check mine and add food to some pretty much daily. Fresh goes bad after a couple days so amount fed has to be portioned.

I too glue screen to the top of vented cricket keepers or larger meshed tops. it is simple, reliable, peace of mind, & works. for racks, most just use wire frame shelves from lowes or home depot. pvc pipes can be linked together also. premade kids toy shelves that hold little bins (like at target $100).
