Breeding behavior or ready to fight??

I posted some pics of my Veileds today and it sounds like my female is receptive, so I put her on a stick in the males cage holding it out of his reach. She didn't change color or his she was just chill. Him on the other hand totally freaked out!!!! I've bred panthers before but never Veileds. I wasn't sure if he wanted to mate or kill. He was obsesively trying to get to her all puffed up with his tail curling and uncurling his tail. He wasn't bobing his head, but his eyes had the dark lines. I did a search for Males mating behavior and couldn't find anything. Any input would be appreciated! Thanks. FYI The male is 8-9 months and the female is about 14 months.

He sounds angry to me. He is either not recognizing that she is a receptive female or she is seeing you and reacting to you. I don't put the female in the cage until I know that they are both "in the mood".

I've read raising Kitty and it sounds like Veileds have generally the same courting behavior as panthers. Is this the case?

In my experiences here, Panthers "court"-head bobs, etc...BUT-Veileds just go for it. If you are talking about the male you got from me he will be 8 months in March-and one of his brothers Lombardi has already fathered a clutch, so they obviously can breed. Leon-the father of these guys literally turns black when he sees a female and then chases her down and mounts. His partner never seemed to mind! I would watch for any threatening behavior such as biting, hissing, head-butting, etc...He may be a bit immature yet.

Ready to go....

I agree with Julie....Veiled males tend to dive (lunge would be a better term)into it. Especially first time breeders. There is no coy courtship like Panthers often have. They can be very agressive and forceful. Your female is definitely ready since she is just hanging out. She should be able to handle him though. Females are not shy about biting males if they are not receptive. Just keep an eye on them at all times when they are together. If she does start fending him off at some point take her out. Please do take a video :)

The first time I put my Female Sookie in with Lombardi, She seemed receptive until he got close, as soon as he was near she turned incredibly violent and was removed. She was unreceptive. Well several weeks later I sort of noticed her recepetiveness accidentally while she was out having her cage cleaned... She was spotted Gazing into Lombardis cage with her tail curled in an upright position.. I let her in... and Lombardi went right for it... It took him a few minutes to get things figured out. She was so patient and calm with all the poking and pinching and climbing all over her. Good luck with you pairing... Hope it comes out well. If he doesn't seem interested, or if there is an violent behavior between the two of them, remove her and try again in a week or two.

Here are a couple pics...

Great pics :)

Now those are some nice clear fabulous pictures. You were not kidding when you said it took him a few minutes to figure things out. Great illustration of how things happen in the cham world!

Thanks.:) I was so excited when it was happening I almost forgot to take pics. I am glad I remembered!

My two vieleds show off quite a bit when they see a female. it isn't much different than when my two males see one another. They do look like they want to fight the female but they are just trying to impress the ladies.

If he makes any agressive moves remove him.

From my understanding when it comes to mating veileds are more gentle than the panthers.
