bite of a vieled

during the baby and juvenile stage, you can probably get away with the bites.
but i would not risk it at all.
The adult, however, can inflict you a nasty laceration.

I wear nitrile gloves and some thick mitts if i need to handle him.

As a lot of reptile bites, chameleon bites can give you tetanus and some other infections.
Also, practice cleanliness. I would not let him roam around your daily furnitures like bed, towels, or etc.
You can get ring worms or some other parasites from them (if your cham has ring worm parasites).

Notice that veiled only bites when they are cornered and have nowhere to go.
There are ways to take him out without making him feel the necessity to bite.
Most veiled chams will hiss and run for their lives.

My guy is all bark no bite...so i'm not sure. I can't imagine they are that bad if people continue to handle them.

But then again I can only say that because I have not been bitten *knock on wood*

i do not normally handle him until i have to.
So far, he has accept me as his primary care taker :)
but he doesn't trust other people.

well i was giving my veiled his liquid vitamins and he put a couple nice marks on his squirter. i couldnt imagine what it would have done to my finger.

Ahh, they sound scary. I hope mine doesn't get that way. He knows my hand means food so he at least somewhat trusts it which makes me glad.

I would still love him either way! :D

Chameleons teeth really are not big enough to puncture the skin all the way (most of them anyway). I guess the exception is if they thrash their head back and forth. Then they tear up enough of an area to draw blood. A healthy adult should have enough pressure to make you think your finger just got shut in a car door. It hurts but nothing to bad. I think the nails are worse then the bite. If you get an adult on your hand that is uneasy with the handling sometimes they can dig them in pretty hard, they are long enough to draw blood in some circumstances.

Ya that happened to me. But it was on my nose! It hurt

Their bite may not be bad, but their grip can be downright painful!

Recommended after 6 months, almost mandatory at 1yr. When they feel like they may lose their grip they clamp down and ain't NOTHING getting them to let go. And they WILL break the skin with those nails.

i say anything that deals with bites and scratches from a living thing (and reptiles are among the groups) will require you to get tetanus shot -unless you already have one 5 years ago or less)

Oh yeah, Creecher must be in her teenage years as she charged me today when I opened her cage door. She hissed but did not snap. Her nails have really grown too!

-responding to earlier post- yea i have a mess load of scratches, seems all my chameleons like to squeeze the crap out of my hands and arms.

Lol, my Cham. won't even let me pick him up to do anything. I have to wait for his slow butt to move out of the way. He gets annoying sometimes but when he colors up I forget about all of his nonsense because hey, hes a great looking Veild
