I absolutely agree with Sang. If you're willing to get a bit more serious about photography, I would urge you to invest on a Nikon D40-- it's your best choice in the -$800 price range.
On the other hand, if you are set on a point and shoot camera, I also agree with MEPOKEU, check out the Canon SD1100 IS, or even better, the Canon SD880 IS, which goes for about $260.
Most importantly, forget resolution. Unless you're shooting for large prints, I would look into a camera with a good optical zoom, acceptable ergonomics, user-friendly controls, and a nice LCD.
The D90 is a great choice if you're willing to spend more than $800-- in fact, it can produce the same (if not better) quality image (with improved ergonomics) than the D300, which costs almost twice as much. The D90 also has a video recording option (in 720p), which is more of a gimmick as the video from the D90 is highly compressed, and produces HORRENDOUS rolling shutter artifacts (Jello effects), and is FAAAAAAR from the HD video solution it is made out to be.
Good luck!
