Best Blender for Grinding Beans for Gutload

Hey everyone!
I've been getting into mixing an SPF brand of gutload and I've found grinding beans in a blender can heat that thing up like crazy. And it takes too long to be safe for the blender.

I thought of going to an 1000 watt or higher blender, or maybe even a stone mill. I'm just caught in between the two. Can anyone lend an educated word?

A coffee grinder works best. I got mine from a coffee shop that closed down and man can I get stuff ground down in to allmost dust and fast.

Great suggestion! I'd been using my blender and it does take awhile to pulverize beans and stuff.
 
Texas Ranger: I couldn't agree more with you, after all a coffee grinders sole purpose on this earth is to grind beans!
You might want to check out Ebay for a used commercial grinder. If you really want to grind fine then check out an espresso grinder, that's what they do best. They also have more of a micro adjustment as an espresso grind is always fine. If your looking to grind less fine than look into a grinder like you see at Costco. I would stay away from the little cheap bladed grinders, you want something with burrs. The benefit with burr grinders be it flat or conical is that the ground beans are very consistent in size, something very important for a good espresso! Oops starting to go off subject but you get the point.
 
I use a coffee grinder as well. Unfortunately the past couple of years the cheap $10 coffee grinders are getting hard to find in the stores- seems to a be a shift for grinders with more features. The thing is- I found the cheap ones last longer when grinding stuff up than the more expensive! I had a $10 one last 3 years for me with heavy use for grinding invert food every few days. I haven't found one the past couple of years that lasts more than a few months of light use at any price! Anyone know a good brand and model that will stand up to heavy use?

I been using a La Cimbali Junior for 5-6 years now and have ground hundreds of pounds of coffee with it. It may not have cost $10 but the motor is as strong as the day I bought it and you can buy replacement burrs. I also have a Nuova Simonelli MDX for back-up. If you want to grind a lot and grind evenly buy a commercial grinder they'll outlast you. They are pricey but that's why you buy one used. If you want to see consumer reviews on them go to coffeegeek.com and prepare to be overwhelmed. There's way more then there is different types of chams. If your patient and can wait you can usually find a decent one for around $100. That is a lot but $10 every couple of months for a piece of * that grinds slow and unevenly is certainly no bargain!
 
Yeah actually I've been trying all kinds from local department stores from ~$14 to $50 the past couple of years and they all burn out in a few months.

Thank you for the tip- where do you go to find the used excellent grinders? E-bay?
 
I bit the bullet on the La Cimbali and bought it new and Ebayed the Nuova Simonelli. Most of these grinders are made in Italy and have really went up in price from when I bought mine. Although with this economy and closing coffee shops Ebay is still your friend. I've never looked on Craigslist but these grinders are heavy and not paying shipping would help off set their price.
 
I got the cheapest coffee and spice pulse grinder I could find (Black and Decker brand, under $30) and I've been using it for for gutload making three years with success. The only thing it has trouble grinding quickly is whole brazil nuts. I have a Braun brand grinder for our coffee beans, and one another Black and Decker for spices). You dont need anything fancy. Just dont over-load the thing and pulse instead of constantly driving it.

Beans, btw, are typically high in phosphorous, so be sure to be compensating for that if you are making dried beans part of your gutload.
