i have a 2-3 month baby veil chameleon and her cage is 16x16x20 what size basking light should she have . we got her 25 w by zoo med basking light but i dont think its not enought heat for her.
What are the temperature readings at the basking site? Its more about the temp then the wattage. The maximum you would want for a very young cham is about 83-85 degrees.
You need to keep the temps at the basking spot closer to 85. You need to either get the bulb closer to the basking spot, or increase the wattage until you get the temps you need.
By the way, What temp is the room at. If you are only reaching 70 degrees with a 50 watt bulb then the room is either really cold to begin with, or the bulb is way too far from the basking spot.
You can use a 75 watt if neede. I only use a 60 watt over my 24"x24"x48" cage. Also get rid of the infra red night light if it produces ANY light. If you need more heat at night get a ceramic heat coil or a space heater. Chameleons need dark to sleep properly. Generally you should not need heat at night if your room temps stay above about 60 degrees.
For the basking light you can use regular house hold incandescent bulbs, 40 or 60W. You don't need to buy a specialized and expensive lamp to maintain the correct basking temp. A 6" dome trouble light with a clamp from home depot and a 60W bulb will work fine for most places in the winter. I switch to 40W when it warms up. You do need to provide UVB with a reptisun tube flourescent. That you cannot buy at the home improvement store.
i already have the uvb light just was concern bout the watts on basking light. i have a 60 watt now in a 16x16x20 cage and the temperture is reading 70 does this mean i need at least 75watt cuz i know 70 is to low for her to basking in
