Banana Tree

Anyone ever kept a species Banana Tree in there chameleon cage? I have some kind of Banana Tree that's been around for a while that I'd have to look at and research to be able to find out exactly what kind it is. Anyways, every year it sprouts new growth and I would like to take some of these new small ones and put them in with my Veiled. I just wanted to know if anyone has proof of them being safe for chams to eat or if say a leaf or stem breaks that some type of plant liquid or sap won't irritate his skin or eyes to the point of causing serious harm to him. I have heard of someone keeping a Dwarf Banana Tree with their cham.

Doesn't seem to be poisonous. People do cook with them and use them raw all the time

Right, and bananas are safe for him to eat so thats all the more reason why I figured he'd be fine with the actual plant.

The ones that say that they make their dogs/cats sick is the same reason that they throw up when they eat grass. It's not toxic it, they eat it to make them throw up

A cashew tree isnt harmful to ingest.
A raw cashew is poisonous.
A processed cashew is safe.

I keep one in my cage. my veil had snacked on it and is fine!
however, my veil is rather large. so that may have some effect on things

Haha I was waiting for someone to post a response like that . I know that just because one part of a plant, i.e. banana, is safe doesn't mean the rest is, i.e. the leaves, but I was just saying that that's all the more reason to believe he'd be fine with the banana tree. Trust me I'm not putting the plant with him unless I get cold hard facts that banana trees are safe, and after I figure out exactly which one I have. It's just not worth taking the risk .

Honestly no. It was given to me for free at the january reptile expo in Manchester NH. they acidently slammed it in a car door and couldn't sell it, so they gave it to me for free.

I would be very careful though...

Oh yeah I will. I'm very paranoid about these sort of things. You wouldn't happen to have a picture of that banana tree or be able to take one would ya?

Cashews are weird in general. The raw fruit is safe but the little nut at the end isn't safe raw

Well shucks. The one I have is all brown too but should start resprouting soon. Do you have any idea on how long it takes for your new growth to be able to get to any substantial size where I might be able to tell if it's the same as mine?

Bananas arent weird?
Its really more like a bosch pear anyhow...

I have used Dwarf Bananas with my panthers for a while. I researched my species (a while ago) and it is not poisonous. If I had my plant list here could run a quick double check. There not great for chameleon climbing however if your looking for a plant to create a shade area they are not a bad pick.

Yeah just to add a little cover for him until I can get a larger Schefflera arboricola in his habitat. I just wanted to check to see if the Banana Tree I have could harm my Veiled in any way. Him being a Veiled is why I'm more concerned. I definitely know the one I have is not a Dwarf though, because it's grown to around 10-12' at times. But thanks for your input. I'm looking for all the solid info I can get on this subject. Do you happen to know any more about other species of Banana Trees, as far as if they are toxic or secrete irritant liquids or saps?

Do you know what species of Banana Tree/Plant you have? I could not say for certain until you provide a positive ID of your plant.

If I recall correctly Bananas are safe, confirmation only can come with a positive ID though.
