Bad respiratory....advice?

Hi, I will introduce myself soon but first of all I was given rather a few chameleons this week from someone selling up. They are not a breeder or huge keeper or anything but in this case I am talking about a male Jacksons originally wild caught about a year ago, been doing fine since. ( I know where he was bought, where he originated from etc). I went to pick him up and was told he had a cut on his eye and had some problems shedding recently, there's no cut but a decent bit blood, now cleaned up. Quite a bit shed round his lips which I have removed. He is very weak and sits completely upright or head tilted back. He is reluctant to open his eyes but can and is definitely respiratory, I see the mucus and hear the click.

What I have done is taken him out the setup I had for him (only been in 12 hours at most) and put him in a nano exo terra as I am worried he falls. I want to conserve his energy as there's very little so have given him only 2 places to sit. He has UV above as per normal. I don't want to over heat him because of species but he does have about 84f under the bulb and a small heat mat on the back as its a cooler room. Still ventilated. Can you guys advise anything else. I have dropped water around his snout and hes taken a couple of drops. How do you get the balance keeping something warm and humid for respiratory that doesn't like heat in the first place?

A vet appointment would probably finish him with stress. Also I have kept jacksons before and his mate is currently up stairs, eating and pooing happily and so are 4 of her babies.

Hi welcome to the forum. I don't look after jacksons but many here do. I understand what you say about stress but your boy needs to see a vet ASAP for antibiotics or you may loose him.

Sorry but Kate is correct. There is not a way to treat a respiratory infection without antibiotics. I would see a vet very soon.

will see what he is like by the morning and phone the vet, the only reptile vet wont be around till tomorrow anyway.

I know there is no cure without antibiotics my aim was to see if there was any way to make him more comfortable for now.

You could go in the bathroom and run a hot shower. Make it all steamy and just let him stay in there for a little while. Not in the shower just in the room.

Hi :)
I'm having the same problem right now with my girl.. She's in antibiotics and had improved overnight after her first day of antibiotics.. No blocked nose and only a little bit of mucus.. Try and get to the vet ASAP.. He'll be feeling much better soon after :)

I'll reiterate what the others are saying - your cham's only fighting chance is if you get her to the vet and get her on some antibiotics. My female veiled recently overcame pneumonia (using Baytril, handfeeding, hand watering and ALOT of care and attention) and while I know an infrared light at night is a no, no...my vet ordered me to keep a 50W infrared on at night to keep her temps up. He told me that nobody likes to be cold when they are sick, chameleons being no exception. So I changed her light to infrared at night, then changed it to daylight basking during the day. I did this regimen for about 3.5 weeks and then when I saw improvements, I took out the night bulb. Either way, antibiotics are her only hope right now, the rest of the advice is useless without those. Good luck!

Managed to catch the rep vet before they closed and have baytril so will see how he goes, trying to keep him drinking small and regular too as hes dehydrated. Will keep you updated. Don't know how the owner didn't notice this!

Good luck and please keep us posted! Lots of us can learn from these threads, and make better decisions when we need to!

He didnt make it through the night and what came out his mouth this morning was like a burst pinkie so he was in a terrible way! Cant believe it wasnt noticed.

:( So sorry. Hate to hear of anyone losing their chams. At least she had someone that cared at the end. Sounds like she had been building up for awhile.

Its def been long term that was the male, the female was housed with him but seems ok a little dark now and then but eating and passing and moving around well.
