Are there any lasting differences between the green and the brown ones?

No, just that the early bloomer males are usually brown. Helps prevent them from getting killed by older territorial males i think. But all the other kids are like "eww he's got a mustache already!" Once they are adults they get as bright as their genes allow. Possibly even brighter than the males that are always green. Here is a thread I'm making. It is an age progression of a male I kept for being very speckled. His dad is the same as the babies you see right here and both moms are somewhat similar. He started off brown and is now ultra fluorescent:
