Baby Panther acting strange...

Hi all,

I'm not sure if I'm being an over-reactive "parent" or if I have a legitimate concern but I'm going to ask anyway, because this has been going on since early afternoon and doesn't appear to be stopping soon.

I just got my baby ambilobe male from the Kammers last Tuesday, up until today everything has been awesome, he was eating well and seemed to be adjusting to his new home. Today around 3pm that all changed and while I think I might know what triggered it, I'm concerned because he hasn't calmed down yet and it is now approximately 7:12pm.

I went to the KC Reptile Expo today and bought some dubia nymphs, thinking that they would be small enough for my baby, they aren't overly large but they are definitely bigger than the pin-heads I was feeding him (bought the dubias today because my petstore is out until tuesday).

Today when I got home, I moved my mossy tail gecko's cage next to my cham cage while I did some cleaning. I noticed that N'kulu (my baby cham) was black and moving around in his tree. I finished cleaning quickly and I moved the gecko cage across the room, thinking that maybe that was what upset him. I then gave N'kulu a mix of 3 mealworms and four dubia nymphs. When I moved the cage away from his, he seemed to calm down, changing back to more "normal" colors for him when he's "at rest"...

However, I was apparently wrong.

N'kulu came out of his ficus tree and down his vine like he always does at feeding time. I've always sat across the room on my bed so far when watching him, never right up against the cage. This time, instead of his nice "grey" color, he was black and had his throat all pushed out. He sat on the branch that his cup is attached to and made no move to feed what so ever. He remained black and began to open and close his mouth in a "licking chops" fashion. I waited for 10 to 15 minutes for him to calm down and he never did, he only stopped being black and returned to normal when I opened the cage door and he ran back up into his tree.

I removed the dubias and left only the mealworms and went out of the room for a bit. I came back about 5 minutes later to see N'kulu zap a mealworm, however, he was still black.

About an hour later, I tried the dubias again, this time N'kulu shot one mealworm, then proceeded to sort of lean over his cup with his mouth open (as though he were going to shoot) but not doing anything...

What has got me concerned is that 1. Something is seriously stressing him for him to remain dark so long, he has NEVER done this since I've had him. And 2. When I started this post, he was climbing down to the bottom of his cage then going back up again...and any time a cham is anywhere NEAR the bottom of his cage it seems to spell trouble from what I've read here...I can't tell if he's just finally exploring or what's up..

I'm really scared now, up until now things have gone exactly how one would wish them too...Am I just paranoid or is something bad going on? I thought maybe he was getting ready to shed, but I have seen no signs of that..

Please help!

Edit: It's like he sees something threatening but for the life of me I can't tell what it is, absolutely nothing about his cage was changed during the cleaning, the only new thing added was the dubias. And the gecko cage moving across the room from his...He is still very active and very healthy looking even though he is puffed up and black, I can't see anything physically wrong with him.

Well, he can certainly see the cage, but I doubt he can see the actual gecko itself. My mossy tail is nocturnal and sleeps against the underside of a branch, he won't move unless I take him out or mist him directly. I guess I might have to consider moving my gecko out of my room if this behavior persists tomorrow.

Thank you for responding, I appreciate it.

I don't know who told you about going to the bottom being bad.. My cham's favorite night time sleeping spot is on a perch at the bottom of his cage... They go to different gradients at different times.. I would agree that its possibly the gecko... Chams NEED variety in their diet so I also doubt that the introduction of something new to try would cause that reaction... Trial and error but try to give him space, no need stressing him out even more

A lot of the posts I've read in the health clinic seem to point to being at the bottom of a cage as a sign of illness, that's why I was worried, I'm glad to hear that it might be okay.

I would say like the FLOOR of the cage may be a problem but my little guys passes the hell out from his little vine... Now you got me all concerned lol /: He hasn't done it in a while but I mean I would first try the removal of the gecko.. If he's a boy it could just be that.. territorial animals they are lol

mainly if hes laying at the bottom and cant grasp onto his branchs would be when its a big problem..... if u havnt noticed him acting weak, I wouldnt be concerned abotu him at the bottom of the cage. Like others have said I think he could be stressed out from the ghecko

Edit: My Mr.Chameleon when I first got him would freak out from me and would go to the bottom of his cage to hide under some leaves so I couldnt see him...

Ditto.. But bottom of the cage to hide? Your little one sounds like he had his trajectory off lol

lol he doesnt do it anymore.... He would go all the way to the corner of his cage to hide behind some of the hanging leaves XD It was funny in a sad pathetic way. Luckily hes so interested in me now he does not do that anymore =p

Oh is this the attack with the tongue cham in the video?? If so this guy must be fun loving haha

Thanks guys, I'm again grateful to have found this forum, I've always had geckos before this and they generally (at least the one's I've owned) don't get a rip about newcomers. I guess I'll wait and see how he is tomorrow, maybe if he sleeps on it, and wakes up with nothing changed he'll simmer down.

yes hahha that it is! XD Mr.Chameleon I call him. Today him and Mrs.Chameleon have discovered that they love to drink from th spray bottle when i am misting the cage XD Mrs.Chameleon particularly came straight up to me, when I moved away to water the plants, to drink from the bottle.

Definitely keep us updated!

O and he actually stopped Nipping at my fingers when I started feeding him the hornworms XD They were MUCH more tastey than my hand. XD

lol GOOD and I'm jealous... My Stanley HATES mist and will cower in a corner the entire time I mist him... Dripping water is the ONLY way he'll drink

lol have u tried spraying on a leaf right next to him? I first started off spraying through the mess cause I didnt want them scared.... then I started spraying the leaves with the cage door open... and i started spraying the leaves that were near them and just kep spraying it and eventually they started to catch on. only took me..... a month? XD Iif you could get stanley to drink from the mister its amazing. I love watching them drink. Its a great bonding time too. One of hte reasons I love hand feeding is it gives them time to get used to me.

**Update**

I determined through trial and error that it was possibly not the gecko cage (I removed the gecko, observed N'kulu, saw no change in his color, he remained black) that was upseting him. Instead, I believe that I possibly did not have enough plants in the enclosure (I had an umbrella tree, weeping fig, pothos, and authurium). I went to lowe's, bought another pothos-esque plant and another waxy-bush and placed them in the enclosure (one in a magnetic planter, the other on the floor but both around the feeding area) and now N'kulu appears to be back to his "at rest" colors.

I feel the "feeding area" was possibly too open, we'll see what happens throughout the next few days.

Ya never know that could have been the problem! They do love plenty of lush green plants! Plenty of options for them to hide when they feel threatened! I wish you luck!

Thank you :D Now I just have to make sure he eats >_< with all the plants now, I fear the crickets may have the advantage :p

u free range ur crickets? Mine cant crawl out of their dish...when I do decide to put them in the dish... I dont like freeranging crickets cause their hard to find -_-
