Baby Cham firing up?

My 3 1/2 month old panther will "fire up," not so much in color but he will puff up and open his mouth, in his cage randomly throughout the day--even when I am not near him. I'm assuming this is normal, but could it be a sign that he is stressed out?

basking spot

well seems to be on his perch where he basks--which is where he is 95% of the day anyway...

Idk what temp is suppose to be for a panther but is it like firing up as puffing up his whole body?
Describe it?

I just thought of it. If its like the whole body and not just his mouth then he is possibly just "firing up" expanding his skin to absorb the heat. Mine does that under the bask, expands a bit.

Is that what you mean?

Has this just started?

You have only had him for about a week so he could just still be settling in, even though you are not close by he can still feel scared of your presence if you are close enough to observe him doing this. Does he have places to hide so he feels secure?

Approx 80 in his basking spot...have you actually measured the temp or are you just guessing? What are you using to measure the temp?

He is filling himself with air like chams do to make themselves look bigger.. puffing his body somewhat and his neck puffs out a lot. And he also opens his mouth. I know this is a natural thing, but I want to make sure it is not a sign he is stressed or feels threatened. especially because he will do it when i am not near him.

Thanks for the thoughts so far..

I have measured the temp with a analog thermometer.

This is common. I'm not sure of what the cause of it is but its normal. When my baby veileds hatch they do this action for a couple of months. Nothing to worry about :)

Thanks bongrod! I was thinking maybe it's just some male hormones kicking in

You need to measure with a digital thermometer. The analog type are notoriously inaccurate and you could be cooking him. The temp may be way too hot.

You're right I need one ASAP. Home Depot sells these fairly cheap right?

It's not like he stands there with his mouth opened for any extended period of time, which would be a clear sign to me he's overheating. none the less, I need a digital thermom.

The other thing is, he remains a drab brown color for 90% of the day and he also basks for about 90% of the day. Is this normal?

Here are two pics: first one is what he looks like basking and second is what he looks like when he's roaming around or in the foliage.

It wont hurt to get yourself a digital thermometer they are a lot more accurate than what you have got so you can get a correct temp reading. It maybe way over 80 and he is too hot.

As I said you have only had him a short while and he is a youngster so give him his space and privacy to get settled. Maybe get an old towel and throw over 1 or 2 sides of his cage to give him more of a feeling of security. I did this with my youngest and he settled down quicker.

Here is a pic of mine in the first week I had him many moons ago......he was like a little puffer fish for the first few days til he was comfortable with his surroundings. Sorry about the bad quality phone pic :/

Snap pssh....we must have been typing at the same time :)
