Archies visit with the vet

Well, I've hardly seen Archie, my Graceful eat in a long time. He was not leaving any droppings so I didn't really have anything I could bring to get tested. I think he ate at least a cricket or two a few days back, cause he finally left a couple droppings in the cage. I took him and his samples to a vet that specializes in exotics today. We went over his care and such, and he was examined in front of me, and also taken to another room where he could be better examined under lights. Unfortunately no smoking gun found. Vet said he is thin, can see his ribs etc, and possibly slight dehydration. No signs of mbd or anything else visually. Also nothing found in his samples. I am waiting on the result of one test for crypto. Vet said it was possible he has cryptosporidious. Unfortunately if this is the case, she said there is not any real cure for it. In the mean time he was prescribed Bactrim/Septra which he needs to have daily for a minimum of 14 days. Also has 3 doses of Ponazuril and also gave us a feeding formula I need to give every 2 to 4 days depending on if he is eating anything else or not. I hope I get good news, would hate to hear he has something I cant help him with.

I will say the vet and other staff were great. Dr. spent a long time talking to me about him and made recommendations on his care. The staff was very nice and caring to Arch. Also, one of the staff spent alot of time showing us how to give him his medication. Gave him the 1st round of each medication and his supplement. I spent 2 hours there, no rush job.

Sorry to hear that your cham is not well.

Unfortunately, Gracilis chams tend to be wildcaught chams.
There are a number of reasons why a wildcaught chameleon isn't acclimating, including blood-borne parasites and simply an inability to psychologically adapt to captivity.

Since you have to give him medications, it might be a little easier on Archie if you drop a bug or two into his mouth when he takes his medicine.

No idea where you are located but natural sunshine often perks chams up and stimulates appetite, so if your weather permits, a little supervised outdoor time may help.

You can also double-check your setup against this new chameleon forums caresheet to ensure that everything is correct:

Hope Archie perks up soon.
