I'm going to buy my kid a temp gun for Christmas and there's such a huge range of products out there. Anybody have any advice. I'm thinking of something in the $75 range assuming that I should be able to get something decent and reliable for that price. Love any input.

ha i used to be a marine mechanic so i had one in my tool box. its a little exspensive... about 140 dollars. but it has a lazer, light up display for night time, and reads in C and F. also its accurate up to 30 feet withing in a 1/10 of a degree. life time warranty aswell. Its a Matco

I agree with cham_man and go with the PE1 for $25. You don't need anything more than that unless you want all the fancy laser, C & F etc. I got mine originally for my bearded dragon's basking spots and never had one for my cham. That said, once you get temps set you'll find you won't need it much unless you do a new setup or change existing one. I'd spend any extra money on a UVB meter. That is something that can always be used especially with all the different bulbs coming out and the controversy on different types. They are a more expensive item. Save the extra $50 on the temp-gun and put it towards a UVB. Just my 3 cents ;)

Howdy,

As you read through temp gun specs, look for the Distance:Spot ratio. 8:1 is a very good ratio. It means that if you are 8 inches away you are measuring a 1 inch diameter spot. I have the PE-3 which has 8:1. I think I recall the PE-2 to have 6:1 and the PE-1 might be 1:1. That's ok, just make sure you are really close to your chameleon's skin to measure it's temp :).

Cheap solution $20 and 6:1
