I think the "look but dont touch" school of thought comes mostly from ppl with science/naturalist/biology training.
Years ago, I talked to a few pHD scientists at zoos and conservitories about old world chams, and they gave me the same advise, forget it!! chams are wayyyyyy over your head as a non-pro reptile owner.
Stay away from them, if you get one, it will die within a few months, etc. etc!!
That philosophy still exists and people are intitled to their own opinions, but I ask them; ' what about when my cham BEGS to come out and runs up my arm with happy glee??!!
Am I suppost to just brush them off of me and scold them; 'hey! cant you read text books!!?? you arent supposed to like being touched!!?? LOL
How about when little Squee runs up my arm and camps right in the middle of my back where he KNOWS I cant reach him!!?? He likes it there, and I have a hard time getting him off without having to take my shirt off!!
I only have one cham, little Smidget, who doesnt want to be touched, he does not care what I do, and can even work and clean around him, but the second my hand goes near his head, it's met with hissing and snapping.
But, I work and interact with all my chams every day, weather it's taking them out from sun or free range, or hand feeding, or just putting my hand in the cage.
So they arent just 'lumps on sticks' starring at me when I walk by, I get them out and about and involved
Maybe Smidget will tame some day and maybe not, but at least he is used to me being around and is no longer affraid.
