Any Ideas???

Hey guys I’m new to the forum but I’ve been keeping and breeding reptiles for several years now. One of them being veiled chams, in which I’m very familiar with. About a month ago I picked up a trio of ambilobe that are about 8 months to a year old. 12 days ago I bred one of the females and she acted normal for about a week. Now she goes down to the bottom of the cage and hides and I have to put her up in her basking spot. Once I place her there she stays but once bed time comes she goes down to the floor of the cage. Is this normal with the panthers? She is displaying gravid colors, eating, drinking and defecating normally.

Any help or ideas would help

Thanks,
Eric

if you bred her, she is most likely ready to lay eggs. put in an egg laying container ASAP.

IMO she was too young to be bred though.

She is looking for a place to lay. Place a bin in the bottom. Also fill this out

She is 13 months old and has already laid a clutch of infertile eggs before I got her. The younger female I still have yet to breed due to her only being 8 months old.

As I said, I’m not new to chams, just this species. There is not a lot of info on activity on females after breeding. My female veileds always go to bask more after breeding. This girl is doing just the opposite, which baffles me. I have palpated her and no signs of major egg development. She eats, drinks, and defecates as she should.

where in god's name do you keep all of these!!!

New Ami Leachianus.................SO EFFIN JEALOUS!!!!!!

CAROL: LMAO i was thinkin the same thing. i seriously have a ton of animals but he puts me to shame.

I actually have a couple of facilities now, and getting ready to make an extension on one to support new growth. I'm getting ready to enlarge my Superworms business as well so I will see if I run out of room again. As soon as I get some time I will take some pics of my favorites in my collection and my breeding colonies and post them.

Never mind I figured it out, she could see out of the window and it started stressing her out. I covered the front of her cage and she went back to normal. I’ll get some blinds and cover the window.

Thanks anyway...

Sorry if I missed it. Is she housed with any other animal or by herself? She could be getting stressed by another cham if she isnt by herself. I wouldnt think she is ready to lay yet. If she was that far in to gestation when you bred her I dont think she would have accepted the male.

She is by herself, that’s how I keep all my chams. The only time they see another cham is about a week before I breed them and then I move the male to across from them. I decrease the space between them a little each day and watch the female. If she shows receptive coloring I place them together and wait for copulation to ensue. Once the deed is done I separate and they don’t see each other until next season.

I would go ahead and get a laying bin in there ASAP. They like to dig test holes before they lay. Thats what my panthers do. And just because you cant see or feel eggs doesnt mean she is not full of them. One of my females just laying a clutch of 32 eggs and I couldnt see any signs of her carrying that many. She just got a little chubby. Then boom 32 eggs.

She has had a lay box in with her since the day I got her. I like to keep lay sites in with my female chams at all times. I've found that you never know when they're ready to lay. I usually can see some form of lumps on their sides or feel eggs when palpated. She hasn't gone down to the lay box that I can tell, no marks in the media. Since I covered the front of her cage she's acting normal again.

On a side note one of my veiled clutches pipped this morning. I’ve got 4 pipped and 8 others sweating and collapsed.
