I'm new here and newish to chameleons but not reptiles. Chameleons are a lot different than beardies though. So what do you think of the set up for a veiled chameleon about 4 months old? Plan on cup feeding for a little while at least. All live plants chosen from the live plant data base here, throuhly cleaned and replanted in cleaned Terra cotta pots, larger cleaned rocks on top of soil. Large reptibreeze 18x18x36 15 watt 10.0 repti glow, 75 watt daylight basking light, husband is making a mister for now I will be hand misting several times a day. Right now basking area is hitting 85- 88 degrees and humidity is at about 70 percent but it is very humid here right now anyways. Soooooooo what do you guys think?

Looks really good,like the plant layout alot :)
I would however get rid of the substrate the cham could accidently ingest it when free range feeding.
Home made mister sounds cool,can't wait to see that!
And welcome! I'm new to chams and here too.

Hi welcome to the forums :) congrats on the arrival of your new baby veiled.
It's so great that you're already prepared and have his cage Ready to go. My only suggestion is to switch to a 5.0 UVB light or to raise his 10.0 above his enclosure a bit. 10.0 UVB is great for desert animals but too strong for chams.
Also I would take out any soil or substrate from the bottom of his enclosures because veils have a tendency to eat it which can cause impactions.
 
Thank you! I'm excited he's coming home today and I can't wait. I am way too excited and way too impatient lol. I wanted to do it right though so I put it all together worked on the temp and humidity before he came home. This is entirely my 20 year old sons fault. He brought home a baby chameleon. Lol now it started a thing lol. I will remove the substrate though.
 
My husband likes to build and make things. Lol eventually when he is bigger we are going to build a bigger enclosure. We like to make things. I will raise the light for now when we build the enclosure we will be making a canopy for the lighting. How high should I raise it?

I got him from the reptile store I have bought all my other reptiles from for the past 20 years. Hes home and was not a happy boy from the ride all though it be a very short ride. Hes already lightening up and checking his new home out though. I took your advice and added another branch and still wondering how much I should raise the light. We did buy a small dripper for the time being until we get the mister made. I will still mist but this will help while I'm at work and stuff.

I disagree with some of the suggestions for lighting. Your chameleon is pretty much a desert animal, living in the south west Arabian Peninsula. No light you can buy will be as strong as his native lands. No light you can buy will be as strong as the sun regardless of where your animal is from unless it is the Arctic.

The trick is to give him a choice of how much light to get. He can see ultra violet light. Give him enough cover to choose to be in or out of the light at any level in his cage. Most UVB lights, even the best lights, don't penetrate very far down.

Your cage looks very bare at the upper levels. I try to have live foliage all the way to the top. I make shelves--I use either a 1 x 2 or a branch across--to hold the live plants up off the floor--I can get more height out of my foliage and the cage is much easier to clean with a bare floor. Your dragonstrand ledges you have should hold plants on a shelf, but I would suggest you use plastic to try to reduce the weight.

The other thing I noticed was the lack of variety in the perch size, very slippery ledges, and no small perches. They like quite small twigs and branches to perch and climb on. They need the variety to exercise their feet. The plants you've chosen, with the exception of the Schefflera, are not great perching plants. Try finding some appropriate live branches and just stick them into the pots of the existing plants. You won't need to buy new plants but you will have the exact perches you want.

You do not want your animal climbing the screen. They will damage/destroy their toe nails, which makes falls more common.

Thank you he is cute for sure. I was going to fix some things and make it a little more fuller in the top. I want to give him a few days to settle because he is so scared. He is eating and even caught him drinking a little from a leaf.
