Antwon fell from my head....

I opened his enclosure to let some black soldier flies loose in it and he came down so quickly and onto my head I couldn't put the fly tub down quick enough. I slowly backed up and set the container down when all of a sudden he either slipped or walked off my head. (I have hardwood floors) I was horrified that this happened. I immediately picked him up and checked him over and he seemed fine. But gosh do I have to worry about this? Up until this point he has always hung on pretty tight and I try to keep his tail curled around my finger. Has this happened to any of you? I'm still very worried he hurt himself...but he looks and is acting totally normal...eating two super worms from me right after.

Chameleons know how to fall usually. They drop long distances from trees sometimes to avoid predators. Keep a good watch examine his whole body visually for the next few days for bruising and any injuries. Mine will intentionally drop themselves to the ground when they are having outside time. So you’re not alone in the chameleon falling world at all.

Oh gosh! Good to know! In all of the information and care videos I have watched I don’t remember anyone mentioning this. I’m so relieved knowing that it’s normal for them. Thanks so much!

Much safer to not allow them on your head. They are going to always try to get as high as possible on you but you have no control of the situation if they do this.

Keep a close eye on him. Make sure he is gripping normally and has a strong grip. Watch for bruising it does not always show immediately. Most of the time they can handle a fall but it get more risky when they hit a hard surface.

Mango threw himself to the floor (laminate on concrete) last week when I tried to take him to get an extra silkworm. 😱 No matter how slow I move, he freaks out as soon as we approach the living room. I used to think it was the dog that scared him, but the dog is gone, so the next suspect is the ceiling fan (giant predatory bird to him). I died a little bit inside when he fell. He’s been moving without problem and no bruising or other signs of injury.
