Another Dubia questions

Ok, so it's only been 2 months so I may just be impatient, but it really doesn't seem as though they're doing much. I had purchased 300 mixed plus overcount back in mid April. I haven't lost any roaches since their arrival and there are quite a few tiny ones, but shouldn't I be seeing more molts than I am or do they eat their molts?

I sorted through them today and I didn't count, but I separated the obvious males from the females. I had about 2-3 inches of females in a 5 gallon bucket and I could easily see the bottom of the bucket in the males bucket. Highly scientific I know. I would think this would be an ok ratio to have. I tried sexing some of the sub adults, but they all looked like females to me based on the last "joint" of the body.

So am I being impatient? My temp ranges from 85-90 halfway up the tub, so I'm guessing it's warmer near the bottom where the heating pad is. Humidity is usually 50-60%. I feed 2 oranges a week, just slice one in half and set the halves in there. I have a 4 inch terracotta saucer about an inch deep full of water crystals. Another saucer the same size that I fill with bird pellets, beardie pellets, cricket gut load, sometimes I'll throw a high quality grain free dog food sample in there, we get them free when we buy our dogs food. Stems from the beardie greens, carrots. You name it I have probably put it in there at some point.

How can I get these guys to speed it up? I didn't buy them to make them pets, I intended to feed them to all of our critters!

P.S. Any clever ways to keep the nymphs from using the water crystals as a hiding place? PITA trying to put fresh crystals in and get rid of the old ones.

Thanks for reading if you've made it this far and thanks for any advice you can offer.

2 months is not enough time to see a colony reach its full potential IMO. It takes a little longer than that but you may try getting some males from another source to add some genetic diversity just in case. If a colony is allowed to breed on its own without adding new bloodlines, it will slow down the production of nymphs. I have that problem now after nearly 2 years so I plan to add new males to kickstart the colony again. Just a thought.

You might not be giving them enough room. Ive never heard of keeping them layered deep like that. You're supposed put vertical egg crates to give them even more room.

Sorry I wasn't clear, I was just sorting them in buckets, colander style. I have them housed in a 25 gallon storage tub with 5-6 egg crates at one end and the food and water at another.

Reptoman: Should I swap the males out or just add more?

Just add more. You might check around and see if you have anyone local who keeps dubia and trade males. Thats what I am going to do.
