So annoyed with what I thought was a really good pet shop .. The vivarium we got was almost £800 which was custom made but it took them 3 weeks longer to make it than they said . It was lovely when it got here until I had to call them back to fix the back . I asked him several times if the chameleon who was 10 weeks old was definately a boy and he said yes .. I've wondered she is 10 months old has not been eating for about 4 days .took her to the vet tonight to find out she is full of eggs she has been kept in and had an X-ray and an injection to help her pass them . If this does not work by tomorrow she has to have an op to remove them and at the same time she will be spayed .. Altogether well over £1000 I'm so furious at the moment ... Sorry rant over just hop she will be ok

You could take the issue to the pet store, and make them pay for the vet treatment, considering they sold her to you as a male.

I rang them he said it's hard sometimes to get the sex right .but he would rather collect her and take her to his vet , which I don't really want to do and upset her anymore than she has been already .. He asked how much the X-Ray was I said 150 he said his vet would of done it for 75 ... Or he said he would exchange her for a male . No chance I'm not just giving up on her , she's here to stay now ..the vet rang and said she has passed a few eggs but he thinks there are more so he is giving her another injection today and going to ring us tomorrow .. I'm going to tell the pet shop guy that he can pay what his vet would of charged and call it a day I will pay the rest . Just hope she will be ok .. If she passes all the eggs and avoids an op ...do you think it's best to bring her home, feed her up and then spay her to prevent this happening again ? Is it likely to happen again? Ty x

I don't have any experience with females, but I do know that spaying is unnecessary as long as you have a proper laying bin set up. Send a pm to the forum member jannb, she knows quite a lot about veiled chameleons.

No excuse for getting a female with eggs as a male. Any person working at a pet store should know the difference between male and female in a veil. Equivalent to cook not knowing the difference between salt and pepper. Just NO excuse for that. Demand refund for cham and vet. Just simply idiotic. NEVER RETURN TO THAT STORE! (veils are the easiest at sexing even at birth.)

Just realized you never mentioned what species it was, Which is it? And yeah selling a female with eggs as a male is absolutely unacceptable, AND saying that it is ten weeks old, which is impossible. Honestly you could probably bring into play not only the fact that you were pretty much lied to, but also the stress to the chameleon it caused as she was not able to get the proper care immediately because of misinformation. Small claims court case?

Update

Vet rang this am . She had passed a few more eggs but had passed a large blood clot they thought would mean internal damage .. She was also very weak so we told them to put her to sleep and cremate her .. Can't let her suffer . Probably would'nt of survived the op ... She was a Panther And was a very friendly and will be greatly missed .. Ty all for your comments

So sorry for your loss. I know how stressful an ill chameleon can be, and how painful it is to see them go. The pet store is liable for three things now-lying, mistreatment, and refusal to help or reimburse.
