Advice for a new veiled chameleon...

Hello :), I'm new to the chameleon forums, also a new Cham mom. I need advice for my male 2 1/2 month old veiled chameleon. I've had him for a 9 days, bought him from petsmart, put him in a 4 foot tall x 3 1/2 foot wide x 2 foot screened in cage my husband and I built. I noticed he wasn't moving around much, just basking a lot, not sleeping just basking, he also has shaky feet when he walks around, so I took him to the vet, she said he's not getting enough calcium, he has some pain in his feet because he's not getting enough calcium and that he needed the reptisun 10.0 instead of the reptisun 5.0 because his cage is so big, she also said I should get 2 of the reptisun 10.0 for each side and that I needed to cut the screen out on top so the screen doesn't filter out the UVB he needs, I have the screen with the little squares but I've read so much that 10.0 is too much for a veiled chameleon and I'm also not sure what to do about the crickets, they'll get out if I cut out the screen on top???

I also need help with giving medication, she gave him metacam once daily for 10-21 daily for pain, neocalglucon syrup once daily for 30-60 days for the calcium he needs and ponazuril 30 mg which she give to him there and I'm suppose to give it to him once more for coccidia but she doesn't even know if he needs this but said I should give it to him just in case. When they give him the medication there they had to force his mouth open by gently pulling at his chin, this scared him so bad that he pooped, I felt so bad for him :'( I don't want to scare him again when I give him his medicine, does anyone have any techniques on how to give it to him or advice, I don't want to hurt him or scare him. Please help!!

I'll take anyone's advice about anything, I'm new to this and want to make sure I'm doing the right thing, I want my little guy to grow up happy and healthy.

Welcome to the forums. My advise to you is find a new vet. Did he have a fecal that showed parasites? If not I would stop the meds. Tell us more about his walk. Chameleons do what is called the left walk, where they take their feed and go back and forth with each foot as they walk. This is completely normal if this is what he was doing. I'll see if I can find you a video of the leaf walk. I'm attaching my blog below for how I have successfully raised veileds and another blog with more information on keeping a chameleon.

That sounds like a lot of UVB the vet is recommending. How did the vet determine that the chameleon was calcium deficient?

As for getting his mouth open for the meds...I usually try to get the chameleon drinking then gently ease the meds in while the mouth is open while it's drinking.

I agree with the others. If a fecal found coccidia then ponazuril is the answer but is can be hard on the kidneys, so not to be used as a "what if" .

No they didn't test his fecal, so yes I think the right thing to do is find him a new vet. Seems like they were just wanting money, it's so hard to find a good one. And no he wasn't doing the left foot walk but his basking spot was only getting 74 so I put him in a warmer room and now his basking spot gets up to 85 and he seems to be much happier, I noticed he doesn't have shaky feet anymore and he's moving around so I'm thinking he was just to cold. Hopefully that was the problem. I'm new and learning but I'm reading as much as I can to take care of him right.

Yes I think the UVB 10.0 is a lot to but is it a lot for my size cage? What does anyone else think? I'm not sure I'm new to this??
And she said he was calcium deficient because of his shaky feet and she said he vibrated like he was in pain when she messed with his feet which she said was probably from him being calcium deficient but he vibrates every time I hold him and I'm extremely gentle with him. I also dust his crickets every other day. I think I just got a bad vet....

Be sure to check out Jannb's video on the leaf walk to see if that is what you are describing. Chameleons bask a lot-your guy may not have any issues, but a competent vet will do tests such as a fecal exam before prescribing medications.
