Aborted tongue strike

So I was feeding Aesop earlier and he went to shoot a cricket, but changed his mind about an inch out of his mouth. I moved him a little closer and he made up for the failed strike by getting a two-fer! Is this a regular thing? I've heard of chams over extending their tongues. I happened to catch the whole thing on video.

Do you cup feed or let them loose? If the cricket was on a leaf or something I could see that, but based on the "thunk" sound that the cup makes when Aesop gets one, they are in no condition to escape when they get to his mouth. That makes me think of that motivational poster with the frog strangling the pelican as it's being eaten.
