A very hard decision

You know, sometimes it is enough to save one creature even if you can't save them all. Whether the cham dies or someone buys it- he could replace it. To have the empathy to save something from suffering is the mark of a good person.

Yes thank you guys for understanding.

That is my whole point. If I have the knowledge to save one, not the others, it's better than doing nothing.

I agree. Of course, this is coming from someone who has already done a rescue, so I'm obviously biased :p

As FlChamMom says, either someone else will buy it or it will die. Eventually, that chameleon is going to be replaced. At least this way you know that you've ensured this guy will live a long happy life, instead of possibly dying a slow, painful and unnecessary death. I for one, congratulate you on the decision. You have a good heart.

Post some pictures of your new guy when you can!

Oh no, I'm talking about reporting to .. stuff like fish&game department over the phone, not necessarily the news although it would be nice.. And I will avoid slander, I just want the forums and classifieds and people in reptile groups to know to never come here and how bad it is.

As if they ever will go there, but you know. :(

The regional "fish and game" dept. will have no authority in this case. You will need to find out what local city office has jurisdiction (licensing, inspecting, and prosecuting under local law) over pet shops. It could be the local animal control department or some other office. It varies. You can also send your view about the business to the Better Business Bureau and Chamber of Commerce.

If you want to avoid a confrontation while you attempt to get the cham for yourself (you can try refusing to pay full price...that will ding him a bit in the pocket), you can always write them a letter after the sale, explain your concerns, attach husbandry information on any of the species they had, and inform them that if they do not clean up their act you WILL report them to the proper authority. On your letter make sure you list the agencies that you have also sent a copy of the letter to!

HUGE UPDATE

I have the baby cham. :)

He is a cute little guy. He was green in the store, but now he is sort of a pale greenish yellow.

I could not fit the box into the cage I am keeping him in for the time being, so I was basically forced to take the napkin he was on (he let go of it) and put him in the cage.

Here are some pics.

He looks maybe 3-4 months old? The only thing I would say "wrong" with him is a little chip/cleft in his lip. I took a picture of it.

I didn't want to bother him, but unfortunately I kind of had to. He is being left alone for now.

I will start misting him with warm water tonight and then set up the lights tomorrow.

Yay!

Also an obligatory Monty update. I think he caught glimpse of baby Jax because he acted nervous for a while. He's shedding his beard. :)

He is sleeping right now, I guess because he is stressed out. Poor baby.

I misted him with nice warm water to keep him warm. At night he will get the temp drop he needs.

I'm so glad he's in your care now! He's adorable! He will settle in some and start showing those greens again soon. I believe you did a good thing. Oh I didn't see Monty!! Such a handsome boy! :)

Thank you so much for rescuing him! I am so glad to hear he can look forward to a better life, but I bet that better life ends up being with you! He is SO cute, you'll get too attached to let him go :)

You are a good person.

glad you got him

Glad you weren't deterred into not getting him. As for carlton's statement that fish & game have no authority. Apparently, he has never worked in a pet store. Their mere prescence in a store, gives the owner diareah. I can't count the number of conversations I have had with those guys. They make sure all your animals are legal. They can shut you down while they do inspections, which scares off customers. They also can report any of their findings and concerns to the appropriate channels. When it comes to animals, call NATO if you have to, just not PETA. I am glad you saved the little dude.
