Do you have a mistking already? Or a free range? Both things on my shopping list![]()
If you dont have a colony of roaches, that would be a great investment for any herps you have! Practically free feeders that are always available. When you run out of silks/horns/crickets/whatever you always have a back up. My vote is for roaches. Dubia and discoids are both great. You can also sell off the extras when you have too many to make a little extra money for other supplies.
You can start off with about 100-150 and grow the colony. You wont have to worry about the cleaning crew to reduce the smell. There is no smell. No noise. No climbing. No flying! Maintenance is easy. Heat + Food + Darkness = Happy roaches!![]()

what do i feed them and how often?
Anything that you would feed your crix: Oranges, kale, carrots, bugburger, any commercial dry gutload, etc. And feed them everyday. They wont die if you don't feed them for a few days, but for optimal conditions you should feed daily.
haha okay. i suppose adding on more thing to feed along with the rest of my crew wont be a big dealso what about heat? any non expensive heat mats that are allowed to be used with a plastic tub? what temp should they be at? and what about substrate or cleanliness? paper towels, dirt, leaf matter, woodchips? what about ventilation also? are they as sensitive as crickets? or can i put some holes in the lid and they'll be good?
Pretty simple: Try and find a heat pad (like you would use for your body) without the auto shut off. You can probably find one at Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, etc. Above 85 degrees is optimal. No substrate. Egg crates, paper towel rolls, etc. Oh, place the heat pad on one side of the enclosure, opposite of the food and water.
Hey Amanda I have seen your posts and such with your Leo's and wanted to give you a big heads up about the Dubia. They are amazing feeders! Seriously a great investment, all of my guys eat them, My Veiled and my Beardies. I also have 6 Leo's and only 3 of them will eat them. They seem to turn there heads at them a lot. And my guys aren't even picky lol so I would consider that before you purchase.
Ben
i actually have considered that...i only have one picky gecko who hates superworms, but the rest have been living on mealies and crix. im not too concerned though because i need to start a colony anyways for my big plans of opening a reptile store (hopefully) next fall...but thanks for the heads up!
Yeah all my guys will eat the supers, crickets, mealworms, and the occasional wax worms. Yeah, I am honestly doing the same thing (hopefully) in the next year or two.You should PM me! And anytime, I just know that it is a little harder for them to eat them because they don't really chew all that much also. My girl Jeffery(Though he was a she when I got her) lol eats everything in site ha
she took on a somewhat large Nymph and even she was like holy crap what did i get into.
And holy crap a humming bird just flew up to the flower like 2 feet away from my head!
wow, really? you're starting a reptile store also? you deff have to pm me your plans! we can help eachother out! maybe once both are established, we can be partner stores and trade stock and such! its risky business though, but im up for the challenge![]()
Yeah my girlfriend(soon to be fiancé, don't tell her lol!) of 5 years are really looking into having a Pet store with all the trimmings hopefully. Just need to find a good area to put it in. Hathat would be awesome! I really hope I can take that dive and do it. I would be very successful because I actually care lol unlike half the places around here.
more than up for the challenge also
secret congratsand i totally agree, id love to breed most of the animals in store so i dont have to buy from warehouses or wc...ive already started my business plan and will be meeting with mentors soon so i can perfect it and hopefully get the funding i need, im also currently going to business school, so it should help..
Thank you! She is my best friend and my lady, i love her a lot. Anyway...
LOL this is just getting weird now! Ha I was on track to get my associates degree in Business management and then I am getting my B.S in biology at UW Whitewater/Parkside. Yeah I really want a good store that is clean and everything is great. Just the thing is location location location! The town I live in here in Wisconsin is not big on pets unless it is a dog lol So getting reptiles into there heads will be difficult. So hopefully I can move down towards the border of Wisconsin and open a place. I just hate the fact that unexperienced people will come in and purchase an animal...Need to have like a test lol to see if they have done there research.
