4 month old ...ready??

Niji is around 4 months old now. Niji was free ranging while I was just holding Ellie. When he saw her, his head was bobbing and he changed into bright colors and was dashing over towards her! Ellie is a little over 4 months and she was like "heck no!" lol

I was not ready for this since I was thinking they're such babies still.
Needless to say, I'm going to be very careful with them for the next 8 months!

I thought they went through "puberty" around 6 months?

I would keep them out of vision of one another.

Just seeing a male can trigger egg production. '

Do not let them see one another unless you plan on breeding or dealing with infertile eggs at the least bit. Even if they are young, it is better safe than sorry in my book.

Some females show receptive colors as young as 6 months, but that doesn't mean they should be breed yet.

So my advice is take on out of their cage at a time. They are solitary animals their entire life except for breeding, so you can't blame them really for thinking that when they do see each other

After that behavior the other day I don't let them see each other. I didn't think you were coming off rude either. I posted it so I can get advice and learn
I honestly thought I had more "time" of them being more baby like but I guess not

I made the same mistake a couple months ago. I have a pair of B. transvaalense. Most of the others who got them when I did have theirs together. I thought maybe I was wrong so I decided to put mine together, they were only 5 months after all, no problem right? Wrong, when Hans got a look at Sophia he actually jumped out of my hand, turned beautiful colors, I had never seen before. It was all i could do to get the little bullet out of there, he was on a mission. He won't see her again for another few months. They are 9 months now but that is still too young for my comfort. They may not be ready by 12 months, I am just not sure yet.

I have a 4.5 month old male holdback that is 100% sure he's ready even if I disagree- if he sees ANY other chameleon regardless of age or gender he fires up and head bobs and takes off on a mission- yesterday I had him out and he everted his hemipenis. If you have never gotten a good look at one I strongly advise you against it. It was weird. I think he was putting the moves on my hand haha, awkward
