I just got my very first cham..2 week old male Jackson. I have him for 4 days now. So far he has only eaten one cricket (1/4"..hand fed on the 2nd day) since I got him. I saw him drinking only twice. He is always sleeping (eyes close).

Congrats on your first cham! I got my first about 3 months ago, but I'm gonna tell you everything people told me when I first joined the forum :).

Sleeping during the day isn't normal for a chameleon, and for the eating he could just be stressed out and settling into his new home. And for the cage try and get a screen one, glass isn't good.

I hope someone else can give you more information, I know that wasn't enough to solve your problem but I still like to help :). Good luck!

Hi and congrats! In order to provide helpful information it would be good to have more information on how you keep your chameleon (see "how to ask for help" in the health clinic forum).

A couple of comments:

1. Feeding - at that age you want to feed him fruit flies and pinhead crickets

2. Cage - the cage is too big for a baby and it may be hard for him to hunt effectively. I would move him to a smaller enclosure.

3. Sleeping - not normal, maybe due to the fact that he is not eating...

There is nothing wrong with glass, even tho he has a screen cage..

Congrats on your baby Jackson! I first saw mine and his siblings when they were two weeks old and they were TINY! However, that is really young to sell a chameleon, especially a Jackson - they have more strict requirements than a Veiled or Panther baby.

Mine also lives in a glass vivarium and he is doing very well. He is now 17 weeks old and weighs 5g. They need cooler temps and a good drop in temps at night - at least 10 degrees lower than the hottest day time temp. I keep mine between 80 - 82 depending on whether the central heating is on or not. It is also very important to mist them twice a day as they drink more than other chameleon babies. Hydration is just as important as food for these babies. Mine has only just started to eat things other than fruit flies during the last 3 weeks - fruit flies are really good for baby chams especially such tiny babies as Jacksons. I drop water onto some leaves first thing every morning before I feed and mist and most days he will go to the leaf and drink.
