2 Questions about Dubia Roaches

*Sighs* I asked her about rollie pollies before, too! She says no... wont say why.
And she read a thread about "Hawiian Papaya Flower Beetles"

Hey,

Come to www.dasnakes.com/bcrc and PM nat
she should have some available quickly here.

I got 100 from her and they are doing really well for me,
I made the mistake of feeding off too many before they were adults though,
so don't do that!

I think she asks 50$/100 but you can probably haggle. It is worth it though,
considering what crickets and other bugs can end up costing you.

However, it will take 5-7 months before you can start feeding from the colony.

I seriously would rather breed dubia than BB Flies.
When they pupate, they stink so bad....

You can hasten the production by keeping your Dubia warm and toasty.
Plus, once the colony is established.. you pretty much have almost a constant never ending supplies of food (unless something mess it up)

I've had roaches for about 5 years now and trust me, they're worth it!

It always takes a while to get the colony established, but it's just maintenance
once a week to add some fresh fruit, take out old scraps, and add some water,
otherwise they are maintenance-free.

It's a huge reward for the small amount of patience and work they take!

Try starting with Kingworms (aka superworms). It takes awhile, but Your mother may find these less offensive. Once she's seen that you can care for those without causing a household plague, maybe she'll consider allowing you to branch out into different insects.

I've had a lot more kingworm beetles escape than roaches!

I hate them because they dig a tight hole into backgrounds or substrate and
pupate, then when they become a beetle they just roam around all over the place!

If you use kingworms, make sure to use a feeding dish with a tall rim!!!!!!!!!

Tell your mother this..in fact she can call me... 206-356-1458

I live in Seattle, and I'm from BC so I know you have similar weather.

I called three, (count 'em THREE) entomolgists at three seperate universities in the US. Two of them were in Washington state. All three Entomologists said that you have a better chance of having a butterfly infestation in your house then a blaptica dubia problem. They're TROPICAL. My colony will literally NOT BREED AT ALL unless I have their temps in 90's. They don't smell, they don't make noise, they can't fly, they can't climb, they mature in 3 months flat and give birth to 30 babies a month - it's like God knew about the herp hobby before he created all living things!

Also on the topic of roaches in general - there are over 4000 species on the planet. There are only about 7 or 8 species that are considered to be actual "pests". The american cockroach gives the rest of the species a bad name.

IF you keep your house thermostat in the upper 80's, leave food all over the floor and small trays of water...you might have a dubia problem. Tell your Mom to call me or my herpatologist here in Seattle. It's all about knowledge. :) good luck. My battle was with my wife.
