Tell your mother this..in fact she can call me... 206-356-1458
I live in Seattle, and I'm from BC so I know you have similar weather.
I called three, (count 'em THREE) entomolgists at three seperate universities in the US. Two of them were in Washington state. All three Entomologists said that you have a better chance of having a butterfly infestation in your house then a blaptica dubia problem. They're TROPICAL. My colony will literally NOT BREED AT ALL unless I have their temps in 90's. They don't smell, they don't make noise, they can't fly, they can't climb, they mature in 3 months flat and give birth to 30 babies a month - it's like God knew about the herp hobby before he created all living things!
Also on the topic of roaches in general - there are over 4000 species on the planet. There are only about 7 or 8 species that are considered to be actual "pests". The american cockroach gives the rest of the species a bad name.
IF you keep your house thermostat in the upper 80's, leave food all over the floor and small trays of water...you
might have a dubia problem. Tell your Mom to call me or my herpatologist here in Seattle. It's all about knowledge.

good luck. My battle was with my wife.
