You'll need to measure the basking temp to make sure it's suitable ( ~ 82F-84F). For future reference, a regular household bulb works just fine for a basking lamp.

Has anyone ever attempted to connect two of the 2x2x4 DIY or LLL cages side-by-side by leaving out one panel on each side of the cage and some how attaching the two so it is a double wide? How would I go about doing that?

Not 100% of the time. It absolutely depends on the photographer. While the DSLR clearly has an advantage due to the sensor, there are fantastic pics that can be taken with a P&S and horrid pics taken with a DSLR because people don't know how to change the focus point or don't know how to change...
I'm in Illinois as well (right outside of StL), and I had a chameleon shipped from Florida... even after he 'went missing' with UPS for a day, he still made it through just fine.

This isn't really accurate. Every chameleon is different. It's best to limit handling as much as possible, but some will tolerate it better than others.
If you do not want to learn about the technicalities of photography, don't bother with a DSLR... it'll just be a glorified point and shoot since you'll keep it on auto. You can either get a high-end point and shoot or one of the new micro 4/3 cameras that are out.
