A possible better way might be to weigh the feeder and work out its volume. This would give you the density of each item. Size is no guarantee of density.

In the wild would the night time light not change with the moon? It wouldn't always be completely dark but most animals seem to manage.

I was planning on supervising him at all times to guard against bees wasps etc oh and cats seagulls. Your idea of an outside cage seems a good one and I can easily build one as you describe perhaps with slightly larger mesh to get plenty of sunlight and fresh air in. Thanks Trickedoutbiker.
