And now I ask, how the heck do you even get the worms to eat? I've offered mine some oatmeal, bran, some of that crappy Fluker's crested gecko food, Fluker's orange cricket cube, and bits of potato and they're not touching any of it!
Yeah, things have changed a bit. :p
Since dubias grow so slow and you need a lot to easily start a colony, lobster roaches would probably be a better choice for smaller chams and geckos. They average a bit bigger than an inch, and breed like crazy. You can get a group of around 200 from Mulberry...
I tried waxworms, but they ended up getting stuck in their food. Mixed oatmeal and honey, then heated it so I could mix it better, and no matter how I did it, they kept dying off. Any suggestions?
I'm not sure if this is helpful, but I bought a bag of frozen mango pieces, and it is EXTREMELY bitter. Mangoes have so much natural sugars that it's bitter, so while I don't know what kind of vitamins in may offer, but I don't give it to any of my feeders or my crested gecko very often; they...
Just use a little cup or bowl and check it every day. The beetles don't fly, so it doesn't need to be closed in.
Also, make sure you have the worms deep enough. I've been keeping my growing ones in substrate that barely allows them to burrow and found three pupae today, two of which were...
Why wouldn't they? Heck, JB and a few other crestie breeders feed only CGD and dubias.
Another thing to try with cresties is Calci/Repti/Phoenix worms. I got some to try at Petco and my crestie went nuts. o_o Aaaand, the largest worms are a good size for adult cresties.
You will eventually need to put pupae into their own container or you'll lose more and more. They are excellent food for the mealworms and the beetles because the protein is easy to eat... it doesn't fight back.
Nice set up other wise. I like using carrots as moisture as well. :P
And if you can't seem to find any outside to catch, you can order a bunch here; just look around a bit.
Pill and sow bugs are the same thing; sow bugs just can't curl into a ball.
But... you can't order from Mulberry Farms?
Anyway, tell your mom that you could use email Mulberry Farms with what you want to order, use a prepaid card, and they can have the package be held at a USPS store so it's not shipped to the house.
DO NOT use the above recipe. It spoils very easily so it kills the worms. Plus, it's ridiculously expensive.
I haven't tried any of this list, but I hope it helps. https://www.chameleonforums.com/all-foods-hornworms-eat-60418/
Use vasaline or olive oil to keep them from climbing up.
Also, you NEED ventilation if you don't have it. Either a screen top of a lid, or solder out a square in a sterilite bin and glue some screen onto it.
You also must offer high protein food. Dog and cat food is good.
How are you failing...
Boiling water for sure.
According to Mulberry Farms, 1/2 lb of their chow is 24 ounces and needs to be mixed with 3 cups of boiling water. 3 cups = 24 ounces, so that says that the ratio of chow to water is 1:1.
