mealworm breeding set up...so far..

so this is how far i have gotten in 2 months with my baby meal worms( i wanted to start with babies as i wanted to know what they had been fed their whole lives) i call it "controlled gutloading"..well i have beetles ready to mate and am just to excited to wait to show you guys the completed set up..( hornworms are on the way but im holding back till i have a full process vid, even with flying hovering moths feeding on the hummingbird feeders)..soo anyway, hope you guys like it and get some ideas from it!

sweet!! thanks..yeah i will post it as soon as i see some babies (once i see them i will just go to walmart and pickup a three drawer plastic cabinent)..and then presto! i will have a real set up (one that the bf's and gf's wont freak out about"OMG youre growing bugs!!", and look professional!!

You will eventually need to put pupae into their own container or you'll lose more and more. They are excellent food for the mealworms and the beetles because the protein is easy to eat... it doesn't fight back.

Nice set up other wise. I like using carrots as moisture as well.

i will keep that in mind (one reason why i wanted to have a three drawer set up) i just didnt think they'd all live this long..haha

Just use a little cup or bowl and check it every day. The beetles don't fly, so it doesn't need to be closed in.

Also, make sure you have the worms deep enough. I've been keeping my growing ones in substrate that barely allows them to burrow and found three pupae today, two of which were already eaten up.

wow..i have not had a pupa eaten yet..and i only have about four left that need to molt to beetle..i still have some worms going..i think i will have some more pupa soon..i may just get my three drawerr system going..my waxworms are doing great , wish they where more nutricious!!

Cool. I'm not sure of you know this but if you cut out the bottom a the top drawer and replace with screen, then you can keep your beetles in there and the babies will be filtered out and fall in the below drawer.

Also what do you feed the horned worms and moths?

i was actually going to incorperate that in the "stage" growing bin set up i wanted to do..that should be awesome!!..as for the hornworm food, i just buy bulk from mullberry farms..

I tried waxworms, but they ended up getting stuck in their food. Mixed oatmeal and honey, then heated it so I could mix it better, and no matter how I did it, they kept dying off. Any suggestions?

well i pit more oats than honey in it and also use a jar of pollenand about a third cup of sugar, everything except honey goes in the blender, then when its all powder mix with the honey, i stir it by hand, takes about an hour to mix good..you want it kinda dry..and then the clumps settle after about two days in the sun..then its more of a dryer compound and not soo sticky..i will make a vid of my wax worms as soon as another batch comes in (kinda like horn worms..have to wait, hard to just have a constant supply..
