Just to reinforce what others have said: The gut load doesn't look too hot for chameleons. For Chameleons Steve Simms developed Cricket Crack primarily to facilitate chameleon needs (but it works great for any herp) as such that is the primary gut load I use other than the occasional bug burger...
Ha ha I'm pretty sure neither Dayna nor Chris want to edit my posts anymore, that falls on the new guy. I just noticed there is a serious Mod deficiency I feel sorry for you guys.
I fully agree about the quality of the crickets making a big difference.
I know I heard Jim mention somewhere about feeding only crickets but couldn't find it written down anywhere. If he isn't banned right now I bet he would have some great insight.
:) I was joking sometimes I forget my sense of humor isn't translating well. To be clear I really appreciate the discussion, it is thought provoking. :)
You guys are giving me a headache. A detailed nutritional breakdown by feeder (the kind that would actually be useful) is essentially impossible. The results would be very different depending on how the insect was raised, food sources etc...
The listings that currently exist make for useful...
Chameleon dietary needs are far less complex than humans and I think we should immediately discard the comparisons. I just think it is silly to try to draw illustrative comparisons between an insectivore and a complex omnivore.
With that said I don't really doubt a varied diet is preferable...
That made me laugh! If we just made a sticky post for Big Box Pet stores and sleepy chams it would sadly cut down on half the threads.
Sadly I don't think I have much more to add. I do have 4 Senegal Chameleons and 2 Females that are pretty much the same size, age everything. They are still...
First off I also completely respect the well thought out answers and experience you're sharing and don't want to come off as actually arguing. I just want to make it clear that there is no definitive answer rather just different points of view and both have merit.
I feel like the "variety" we...
Have you legitimately seen a chameleon starve to death because they refused crickets? I would expect that we see a tendency for chameleons to seem to do better with mixed feeders because keepers that take the time to procure and feed different feeder species are paying more attention and taking...
There is a distinct difference between saying that crick only is bad and saying that one prefers to feed multiple feeder species. I really don't think Crickets only is bad and for the many who do feed only crickets I think it is important to focus on gut loading and supplementation rather than a...
I keep seeing where people are posting on here that a cricket only diet is not healthy / not good. I disagree. I think a cricket only diet dusted with Repashy calcium plus and a good gut load like Cricket Crack and fresh veggies is a perfectly acceptable diet for most captive bred chameleons...
Zen Reptiles,
First off I only mist with distilled water, thus my chams and Amphibians are only misted with distilled. HOWEVER for my amphibians I use tap water treated with Repti-Safe and have seen no major issues but I am curious because I do believe there could be problems we would only...
Of the 40K I would bet that even fewer than 20% are active at any given time. I would guess less than 5% are active but I'm sure Brad knows for sure and could straighten us out!
To me some of my favorite people are no longer posting so I don't really come here as often as I otherwise would...
